Default Jason Hairston Kuiu founder dead.

Nothing substantial as far as solid news but it sounds like he may have taken his own life. Really sad to hear. Pro football player business man and hunter.

It’s on the web he passed while on a sheep hunt. I’ve not met him, only emailed about the picture of Jason hugging his Dad after a successful hunt- it made me think of my son and I.

I’ve been to Kuiu in Dixon, about 2 hours east of me in San Jose.

RIP

Terrible news. He was on a "remote sheep hunt." No indication he took his own life, although there were not many details.
Update: there are a lot of rumors he got home from the hunt and commited suicide.

Wow, that is sad news. His brand I thought was really doing well. A very good friend of mine was close to Jason. I have a bunch of his gear which I considered to be the best I have ever used. Prayers for his family and may he RIP.

What sad news. Regardless of how he died, he had a very young family and I'm sure they're all devastated.

I had an impromptu breakfast with Jason at a hotel in Anchorage. Jen and I and the girls were having breakfast and this guy and his very young kids sat next to us (his kiddoes still had on their pajamas). He had on a Kuiu vest that I hadn't seen so I asked about it. He introduced himself and we sat there and talked bowhunting and other things over bad eggs and undercooked bacon...he might have just had fruit as dude was super fit...I had bacon and eggs. He was super-interesting and super-interested in what we had going on. He was kind to my kids and my wife and really enjoyable to talk to...about hunting, about his company, about my work, etc. When he left, he had a plate of food to take to his wife upstairs. We exchanged business cards and when I got home we traded some emails about future hunts that ended with him introducing me to his guy that schedules his hunts. He seemed like a great guy and my heart breaks for his young kids. What a tragic loss.

Jason was also one of the original founders of Sitka. He sold out his shares and started Kuiu. So dude had some success starting strong outdoor clothing companies.

This is so true. A guy I know took his own life this morning also. I told my wife if you gave me a list of 100 people and rank them in the order I thought they might commit suicide, he would have been at or near the bottom.

In this link from a story and CNBC news interview in 2016, Hairston notes that as a linebacker in the NFL he often led with his head and that he had all the symptoms of CTE.

Quoting the rest of the Rokslide post beyond the link:

"I played linebacker, and the way I played the game, I led with my head. I played the way they tell us not to play now," he said. "I have all the symptoms of CTE."

Hairston said he has been very proactive about dealing with his symptoms by cooperating with multiple studies on the disease across the country.

--------------

Common symptoms of CTE:

Suicidal thoughts
Forgetting names, people, things (like dementia)
Uncontrollable rage
Irritability
Refusal to eat or talk
Sufferers and their families have described them turning into 'ghosts'.

So sad for his children. I hate that he suffered in his own mind, but he's unintentionally passed that suffering on to two small children. My heart breaks for and my prayers are with his family. May God hold them close and give them comfort.

Agreed. I don't understand mental illness, but I do understand that those that suffer from it suffer just as if they had cancer or Alzheimers or ALS. To be afflicted by your own mind, trapped inside yourself and no understanding of why or how to beat it....I can' t comprehend what that must be like. I used to think suicide was 100% selfish, and maybe it sometimes is, but when your pain is mental, is daily and there is no escaping....well, people take drastic measures for instant relief. The saddest thing.

Has CTE been proven to increase suicide risks?
