    Medicare, Diabetes, New Direction!

Well, finally the wife and I are changing our lifestyles as we are both retired and MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION COVERAGE is terrible!!

Retired this past November and my EXCELLENT medical coverage ended as well. Thought I had researched and was ready for Medicare THEN reality began as a Senior Citizen.

I'm a type 2 Diabetic, insulin dependent every morning and also take Januvia, cholesterol/hypertension/thyroid medications each day as well.

My great family physician changed all the meds he could to the governments Tier levels...(1 & 2 are generics and manageable financially) but he could NOT change the Insulin injection or the Januvia.

All was going well UNTIL I reached the maximum Medicare & my supplement would pay and now (It's called the GAP).........The Insulin & Januvia cost me over $600/month UNTIL I pay $5K out of pocket. THEN there will be no deductible for the rest of the year. By the way...there is NO generic alternative to the Insulin and only 2 for the Januvia which physicians NO longer prescribe due to side effects/efficacy (metformin is one of them) BUT that's what Medicare in their wisdom wants them to use regardless of detrimental health results. My thought is the government would rather us lifetime hard working folks just die rather than pay out....makes sense so they can take care of non-citizens and those who NEVER made the effort to contribute to our society in a positive way....BITTER, DAM right at this point!

SO....we have committed to BOTH of us going on the KETO lifestyle and with God's help my goal is to get off ALL the diabetes meds!

Moral of the story.....at least for me.....get the weight off and DON'T think for ONE Second those who run Medicare give a DAM about your years of putting the $$ in expecting any well meant return for your efforts. I've already talked to a few TBH members who sent me PM's inquiring about my experience and believe me.....you who are about to go down this LONG awaited event in your retirement may be in for a shock if you have any health issues coming in!

Oh...one more comment...since all this began with the GAP prescription coverage, I have spoke to several professionals and there is no alternative to combat the SUDDEN cost increase as WRITTEN INTO LAW from the politicians until our savings meets their STUPID criteria. ******....dam straight but determined to survive THE SYSTEM! Veterans and Seniors, no respect!!

Looks like you are going to have to take matters into your own hands. Lord knows we all need to lose a few and exercise more, now maybe this is your motivator to get after it and get in better shape. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this. But nobody is going to kick you in the butt and make you change your lifestyle but yourself. Best of luck buddy, I see some sweat and work ahead for you (and me I might add). Let's motivate each other to take it up a notch and get ourselves in better shape. Hell, we might even feel better as a result. I am challenging you!!!

Thanks Perdenal & QB....I've always been the type to "quick react" to a threat and then fight like hell if I'm backed into a corner and I feel I'm in the corner now! CHALLENGE accepted and welcomed! I'd rather face a criminal at night in a warehouse than this BS!

I'm loving retirement and plan to get back in the Land sales industry when I turn 66 in November. That's another thing with SS/Medicare....I can't earn over $1400/month now if I did work, but in the gracious GOVERNMENT guidelines, when I turn 66 I am "permitted" to earn UNLIMITED income??

Guessing that's another "perk" the politicians and our laws are relying on...just take a few $$ I've earned during this year and see if I can last until 66 when I'll get FULL SS benefits...but....the same BS with the prescription meds will continue.

Besides just "ranting" over my situation, those again who are about to go down this road PLEASE do yourself justice and research, talk to those who KNOW and be prepared! It will literally kick your butt and savings if you are not AWARE and prepared!

I don't know your situation, but I'm on Humana Advantage for $18 per month. Five dollar doctor copay, and $35 specialist copay. I take six pills every morning and five every night and haven't paid a dime in four years for anything else.

It will be a few years until I can retire ( if I can afford it). But is this something for retired people, my mom has Alzheimer's and is in a home, it costs us 3,5000.00 a month, plus meds, and personal items. Would this be something that may help her ?

Kuma, at my last visit to the doctor last month, the doctor remarked how my weight had gone up....fast forward to a week later when he had the results of my lab work...bottom line two of my markers were close to being in the diabetic range...he said he does not want to put me on another med and to get the weight down and it will probably be ok. I have started walking every morning and watching what I eat, especially the carbs and sugars. I know it is going to take some work but I am now committed to getting it done. I am on Medicare but do not have a prescription plan as the cost of the two meds I currently take are less than the monthly premium. Good luck with your journey and keep us posted.

Our system is broke and it will not be fixed until all the working people who saved have gone broke.

It's like I've been saying for years. One has to play the game. The game is rigged because they know most hard working people are Christian (or at least honest). Need to hide all your money and say you're broke.

On a side note everyone should go apply for food stamps or the lone star card. Just run through the application. You will quickly understand that nearly 100% of people on welfare are liars.

Do you have the discount cards for your insulin? My son is a type 1 and we save a good chunk of change on his meds with the discount cards. Also, the Keto diet can and will help you with your T2D. It is possible to get off all the DM meds while on Keto. Good luck.

Yes it is. If you're on Medicare, there are lots of options out there for supplements, but this one has been the best for me.

Kuma have you tried GoodRx? As hokey as they sound they can really save money on certain prescriptions. Might want to give it a try. It's free, easy and it actually works some times.

Folks, I appreciate all the comments and PM's! Tried all mentioned above but wanted to clarify a few things for those approaching Medicare:

*I used to use discount coupons from the manufacturer when on my companies insurance...once you are on MEDICARE.....you don't qualify!!!!!!!
*To make it clear....Medicare will only pay up to a certain amount in a calendar year for prescriptions THEN you enter the GAP PERIOD. During this time they will still cover up to 48% of prescription costs so go figure how expensive that still is.
*My biggest gripe is Medicare does not figure the difference from monthly maintenance prescriptions (insulin and more) from say a antibiotic??

I put up this post not only to ***** but also as a word of warning to those about to hit the magic MEDICARE age.....talked to so many in all phases and get different answers all the time AND NO ONE ever explained the GAP PHASE.....

Hope this helps and again...I appreciate the concern and responses!

Update on the KETO promise my wife and I made:

*We both have lost several pounds since starting on the 9th!
***HUGE gains for me in reducing my A1c levels (diabetes marker)
****I used to average around 170+- when I tested myself each morning.....NOW and consistent for the past 2 weeks:

*Tested at 99 this morning, 89 just now and after eating KETO foods, don't go thru the hunger pains with other diets.

Again, my goal is to continue this journey, get OFF Insulin, Januvia and BEAT the Medicare BS at their own game.

                              Today is the Present....because it's a gift!
