Default Euro in progress

I shot this deer 2 weeks ago and wanted to do a euro mount. I've done the boiling thing before but decided to try maceration this time. I'll never boil one again! I put the skull in a Rubbermaid container, covered it with water and added a little rid-x septic treatment put the lid on and let it sit for 2 weeksName: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1351261457.537505.jpg
Views: 6216
Size: 88.9 KBthis is the container I used. I got home from work this morning and pulled the skull out to change the water but there was no need to change it the skull was completely clean! No work involved besides skinning it before putting it in the water. I still have to degrease and whiten it and I'll post more pics when I do that but here it is so farName: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1351261804.310009.jpg

I started doing it this way last year. Works awesome. Beats the heck out of messing up the pot when you boil it. Looks great bud!

It really wasn't all that bad. I tried to keep my face as far away as possible when pulling the skull out, and I only gagged once!

No scrubbing at all, I just pulled it out of the bucket and washed it off with the water hose. I didn't even prep it all that great just skinned it, and cut out the eyes. No scrambling the brain or anything else, there was even a big chunk of meat and the first vertebrae still on the back of the skull when I put it in the water.

I mascerated a pig skull this year.

Works great. I am clear coating it as we speak.

Empty and refill once a week.

Will post pics when I'm done.

LOL!!! Its pretty bad. Ive done this to yote skulls but just used water. Once I put the head in an old pot and put on the roof of the barn. Without a top on the pot the smell didnt get that bad at the house unless the wind was right. I left it like that for about 6 months letting the rain change the water.

The bases of the antlers were submerged enough to cover the entire skull with water and there is no discoloration.

Sounds like what I need to try next time. Just got done boiling one and it's a time consuming pain, plus there's some gross factor with it, too. I think my stomach can handle trying maceration......at least once

Not trying to hijack, but how do you de-grease the skull, and what do you use? Thanks.

A lot of different things are used for degreasing. Some people soak them in Colman fuel some use laquer thinner, I just soak mine in water and about 1/4 cup dawn dish soap, changing the water every 2 or 3 days or when it gets dirty. If its cool outside I add a fish tank heater to keep the water warm. Deer usually take a couple of weeks to get all the grease out, I think the Colman fuel and laquer thinner work a little faster but I'm not in any hurry.

Just take a tissue with a little of the wife's perfume and put a piece in both nostrils. It will get u through some pretty nasty smells...like a cooler you forget to empty.

You may not have to leave it that long, you can tell when all the grease is out because your water will stay clean for longer between changes. I would rather give it to much time than not enough and have a skull that starts to yellow a few years down the road because it wasn't fully degreased.

FWIW ...
You do not need to add anything to the water.
If you change the water, you're dumping out all the "good" stuff.
Don't add Dawn (or any degreaser) until the skull is clean.
Degrease in a separate tub.

Its supposed to sit in that nasty crap the whole time?

You must add water periodically because of evaporation...

I'm not following what your saying here?

My two cents... done it before, but boiling is awesome if you do it immediately.... you don't even have to skin it, when I say immediate I mean the day you shoot it, and it smells wonderful, just like you're making stew... the meat/skin falls off the bone.... letting the head rot then boiling is dumb, done that before too, lol.

It's my understanding that bacteria is what helps break the tissue down to clean the skull. If you are changing the water out you get rid of all the good bacteria and are starting the process over.

Yes sir, that's how it works. If you must change the water only dump out about 1/2 of it, that way the bacteria is still there and doesn't have to start all over.

I have done both, boiling (more like slow boil to simmer) as stated works better if u do it right away, it just falls off the bone, I have a decicated pot. The maceration technique works great too, but dont change the water, I just let that baby sit for 3-4 weeks and gag my butt off adding a little more water, dont change the water!. Macerating the skull produces such a bad smell my neighbors complained lol. But its the most hands off, each to his own, I like boiling, cause my dogs like the boiled meat!

I have tried the boiling on a squirrel that I made an articulated skeleton. That was not pleasant, and my roommates didn't appreciate it at all. I also tried bleach on a coyote skull and it made it really brittle. I'm going to try this technique on a pig skull soon. Whats the best method for whitening? De-greasing with soap or kerosene?
