Took your advice last night and a pretty good 6hrs of sleep. Man I needed that. Thank god. I have been praying a for all the people in Houston and other areas who have lost everything. Kinda makes me feel bad for worrying about a measly 3" in my house.

I feel like the mayor will be getting a lot of heat in the coming weeks

He deserves it. Abbot advised people in flood prone areas to leave early on. The mayor directly contradicted him and told people to stay where they were. Many of the people on roofs right now should have been long gone as the flood was totally predictable.

I know areas flooded that never flooded before, thats understandable. Abbot said if it flooded in the past , LEAVE. Mayor said no,no, stay where you are..

I beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel guys. I'm trying not to get too excited but, so far so good. I have measured a total of 24.5" to this point and all water is down around me. We flooded in the tax day floods with 13". My attempts have definitely made an impact. All the prayers are greatly appreciated. Thanks all. Just in case something does sneak in, I have all forces ready to go. Sump pump in the ground, and 2 2" water pumps.

Good job buddy. Looks like we are through it. The sun just poked it's head out. Although the rescue choppers that just flew by overhead are sombering reminders that there is a lot more work to be done to help those that didn't fare so well.

Yes I know. We loaded up every spare towel, blanket, and clothes and drove around most of the morning donating them to area shelters. My 3yr old son even donated a bag of toys. He wanted to carry it in himself.

What a powerful picture. To see your boy donating some of his toys for others is beyond inspirational. He's been through a lot and yet he gives for others. You are doing something right.

They don't make those decisions on their own. He's been watching someone. You, your wife, or both. Good parenting for sure.

That was fun! just kidding - please let's not have to go through this again!

I showed your post to my husband and he totally didn't understand the sump pump and water thing.

So can you briefly explain how and where you put the sump pump and how it captured the water to divert? He comes from Iowa and kept saying "a sump pump goes in a basement. That's not a basement."

I have some drains around my yard that drain to a sump basin buried in the ground. Similar to a small septic or holding tank. The sump pump is located inside this basin. When the water level is high enough the sump pump pushes all the water to the front ditch. In a normal storm the front ditch will carry the water away from my property with no problem. But with the amount of water we received my front ditch was backing up towards the house. For this reason I had to dig a hole in my ditch to temporarily get another sump pump below grade. I did this by burying a 2.5 gallon bucket and putting an additional pump at the ditch. I pumped that water over my driveway. That ground slopes towards a drain that goes to a detention pond the school put in.

These two pumps were enough to keep the Yard around my house dry. Once the ditch started to back up to the house there was more wAter than the pumps could keep up with. I then had to get the 2" trash pump and pump out my whole yard over the driveway.

Your husband's giving us have a bad name. Must be a Cyclone's Fan :-)

Did a hole in the low spot, in this case years instead of basement.
Friends on how fancy you want to get. Take a blue 55 gal drum drill holes in the sides of it like a colander line the outside with landscape fabric, to help keep febris out. Sick it in the hole you dug out 2 or 3 centre blocks in the bottom to keep it from floating set submersible sump pump in cinder block run hose away from house.
When done fill the hope you dug back in
