Back at it this morning and it actually feels like hunting weather. Big front pushed thru last night bringing some rain and a big northerly wind. Going the change will have the deer on their feet.

We back after them one more time. Have to work late all week so this will be it till next weekend, but I'll be giving the deer around here a break and heading south to chase after red stags and pigs for a few days. My main target buck on this place had been here the last two nights about 35 minutes or so after shooting light, but with the front that rolled in and the northerly winds I'm hoping it gets him on his feet and here a bit earlier this evening.

Had a lil buck roll thru and a couple does now milling around out in a small meadow. They are a lil closer to my wind line than I'd like but so far we are still good.

Just had a decent buck come into the meadow with the does straight down wind about 75 yards or so. Hung up just outa good view, but his nose said something wasn't right. He didn't blow out or spook at all really, just slowly turned an milled away the opposite direction.

I've got several trail cam pics of him from the summer and after he'd shed his velvet, but haven't gotten anything of him in a few weeks. Prolly had to pass if he'd have come in, but his dang light colored cape and big white throats patch may have put me over the edge! I've been wanting to shoot a deer with those colors for a long time.

Just smoked a big calico sow. Prolly the biggest sow I've ever killed. She and her partner circled me for right at 30 minutes, and this one sounded like she had nasal problems as much as she was sniffing the air! I've never seen a pig be so wary, even some of the bigger boars I've taken.

Shot was 13 yards quartered away. She took off hard, and sounded like she piled up 40 yards or so from me and let out the death squeal. If she ain't dead, I'd be shocked!

Well, she was just as big as I thought she was, every bit of 200+lbs and I don't hesitate at all in saying that. I've weighed several pigs just to see how close our "guesstimate" weights were and she's ever bit as big as a lot of the 200lb boars I've seen on scales. She about killed me dragging her out into the pasture sways to get her further away from the area I've been hunting.

And of course, as soon as I set her up to take pics, my phone died. I was so give out by the time I got her drug out, I just decided to live with the couple I was able to take instead of going to the truck to charge the phone for a bit.

Lots of action so far this morning. Seen several stags with one being a possible shooter, but only had a spike in range. Lots of other critters in the wheel house though!

If he only knew....

Back at it this evening in a blind. Had a group of hinds an shooter bull come in but couldn't get a clear shot on him at all. Young bull ran at a hind an spooked the whole group and they went on there way. Hoping they come back in

Just stuck a bull. Shot was 17 yards and just a slight touch quartered away. He ducked a bit on me and I hit him a bit higher than I'd have liked to but still should be a lung hit I'd say. Cross y'all's fingers for a quick and easy recovery

Found lots of blood and several big pools of what looks like lung blood. Easy to follow trail but we stopped at bottom of steep hillside after 300 yards and going to give him a bit longer.

Called it quits at 11:30. We trailed him a long long long long ways and finally gave it up for the night. Had a really good blood trail 90% of the time and trailed for over 2 1/2 hours. Last spot we had blood there was a bunch of it, but after that we had nothin so we decided to back out. Kinda thinking only got one lunch and he was still up slowly moving ahead of us. Fixing to get back after him now.

Well, we've covered about half the ranch's timber with no luck. The rains last night (or flood) washed everything away so basically we were working from scratch just hoping to find him laid up. Sick at my stomach would be an understatement. The more Ive thought about it he's gotta be laid up dead somewhere with as much blood as he lost.
Taking a break and grabbing a drink an snack then back at it
