    John Deere won’t start

I’ll be upfront, I don’t know anything about tractors other than to turn the key and turn it on. When we bought our house it came with it. Don’t know anything about the past maintenance or upkeep. We filled it up with fuel, turned it on, and until the other day it worked like a champ.

It’s an older model 4500 40hp diesel tractor with about 1K hours on it.

Momma used it the other day and everything was normal. When she went to park it, she popped the clutch and it jumped pretty hard. She pushed clutch in hit the brakes and stopped, then put everything in neutral, and turned the engine off.

I went to turn it on and it won’t start. It turns over and sounds like it should, it just won’t turn on.

Anyone have any ideas, tips, or tricks to turn it on?

    PM me if easier

Is there any safety interlocks that could be active?

Check to see if the PTO is engaged. If it is, disengage and try starting it.

Check all levers. I have a Kubota and there is a lever right in between my legs that if it is pull one way it will not start it will turn over but no startie. Same boat I got mine from my wife's farther passing.

Have your wife get on the tractor and start it for you. [emoji851]

Does it have a lever you pull to kill it? Make sure it's pushed back in all of the way.

LOL!!! I can laugh because I know exactly why you posted this...been there.

If the PTO is engaged on my Kubota and I try to start it, nothing happens. No clicking, nothing.

I’m not familiar with diesel JDs but mine gas JD did this until I replaced the starter solenoid.

10-4 guys. Thanks for the replies.

Will check all of the above and report back after I wake up.

Wife already tried starting it and no dice. Haha

If it's turning over okay then it's a fuse or fuel.

                          You ain't right Skinny

I could probably figure it out if I was there looking at it. First guess would be the kill switch is pulled out but I don't know if that tractor has one

I had a 5403 that would not fire and it turned out to be the cold start advanced sensor.
