    Fall/Winter food plot question

I'm thinking about planting a food plot. I just want it to attract deer and probably hunt over it. What should I plant and when is the best time? Are the seed mixes from Walmart or Tractor Supply any good? I'm in NE TX.

The simplest, cheapest, and one of the best is wheat. It will grow almost anywhere and under most conditions as long as you get moisture. If you don't do a soil test just plant it at about 75 lb. to the acre and 300 lb. of triple 13 fertilizer per acre.

You don't say how big of a plot you want. That might change my ideas.

Rye and oats also. They'll growing concrete. I've actually grown both in the bed of my truck.

Elbon rye, not rye grass. Oats & wheat too.
Don’t know your farming equipment, but I am a “thatch”
        Method of planting now.

If you are gonna grow something like oats, I wouldn't buy one of those packages at Walmart or the like. Just go to feed store or tractor supply and buy a bag--plant away.

                  Moisture permitting:.........

Plant second week of September- second week of October

                  NE Texas per acre:

                  #50 bob oats
                  #25 wheat
#20-50 clay& iron peas depending on deer density
#10-20 winter peas... don’t know why... nitrogen I guess, as I’ve never seen a deer eat one (or just leave em out)

This is what I’m going to do this year instead of the premixed fall blend. Anyone know some places in north texas that would have all of these in stock?

I've been planting food plots in east Texas for many years I used to plant a lot of different seeds turnip's, clover, peas you name it. I use to use regular Bob oats until about 5 years ago when I started using buck forage oats . And I know y'all will tell me the only difference is that it has a big buck on the bag and the price. But that's all I plant now very freeze tolerate and hold up well to traffic. I fertilize them 2 times a season.
