Cut and twist or loppers are the only 2 ways I've ever done it. I'm not going through the effort of getting out a saw for that. I could have the head off before the saw is ready to go.
You can completely break a deer down with a sharp knife. Nothing more. As mentioned above, cut down behind the ears to the atlas joint. Sever the spinal cord, cut through all the neck meat and twist. You don’t need a saw or loppers to separate the hindquarters either.
I've used bone saws in the past and a hatchet, it isn't too bad since its just 1 deer. I started trapping hogs and after the first time i trapped 7, it gets tiresome real quick. I bought a battery powered sawzall and just use that for deer and hogs. I don't use it for anything else.
