I haven't been in a Kroger in years. I absolutely despise going grocery shopping. Most of my shopping is done at Sam's Club. And what I can't get there comes from Albertsons. Most of the big grocery retailers have become a cluster f#$k of stupidity and idiocy.

We just had a rant session this morning about Kroger and self checkout. Our local Kroger has 18 self checkouts and 4 regular.

Our Kroger here is doing the same thing. The have 12 self check outs and only one or two normal cashiers. I avoid it unless I just need one or two things. This Kroger is unfavorable for lots of other reasons, too. There is one a few miles away that's great.

They spent millions on that self checkout system. The only way to FORCE you to use them and pay for the system is by not having cashiers around in the mornings.

Exactly why I will not use Kroger. HEB and Brookshire Bros. for me.

HEB is still the best but getting more like Kohl's with the coupons and "sale" prices on everything.

I can't stand Randalls. Order total is $198 until the wife scans her Randalls card and then total is $37.50 LOL And there's no way to know how much you were charged for any one item (unless you buy one thing).

I wish we had an HEB up here

I do self check out every time at Kroger because I hate that they put every item in a separate bag. The only annoying thing about self check out is waiting for someone to pretend to check my id to buy beer and wine

My issue with self checkout is the fact that I am still paying the same price whether I use a cashier or self checkout. If we have to do the job of their cashier we should be compensated.

You are compensated. You can't buy more time. It's our most precious commodity. I'll gladly pay to not stand behind the bratty kids with the doormat mother. The person who waits to dig out their checkbook after the total comes, then writes so slowly you want to punch them in the back of the head, then proceeds to slowly put the transaction in the register, etc. Get used to it. It's not going anywhere. Take out automation that "costs" jobs, and we couldn't afford anything. If that keeps prices somewhat static, count me in.

My issue is they make it far too easy for certain people to just walk out without paying for everything. And we all know who ends up paying for things stolen.

I swear it feels like they set it up just to let certain people take what they want. We need better laws and a lot more use of tasers.

I'm just scattershooting here but if they had to pay for more employees to guard more registers, the overall prices you would be paying would be higher to offset their added expense....

You are paying a price for folks to make a choice....save time or need help.

I usually like Kroger, but this past weekend my wife and I went shopping for her work as she needed to get a few items for her employee meeting and a planned a fun silent auction (using play money). One of the items was a cup cake and she chose a really nice decorated one. As soon as we check it at the register the bagger threw it in a bag and then tossed it in the basket. I picked it up and took it out of the bag an told the bagger he just ruined it. I then showed the checker and then talked to the manager! We had to go back to the bakery and have them remake it. What an idiot that bagger was.

I don't believe this. I'd like to see how much they pay for the self-checkout and how much more loss they have from theft. Employees don't cost that much compared to everything else in a big store.

When self checkouts first started popping up I was like many above....I should be getting paid for doing a cashier job. Then I put myself in the grocery stores position where they are having to evolve, streamline, save and innovate to stay afloat against the .com business and then I realized I was just bitching about something I knew nothing about.

Employees don't cost much? Labor and benefits are usually the most expensive item on the expense side of a profit/loss besides cost of good sold... Not to mention the cost of training, calling in sick/dependability etc./..

I gave up on Kroger’s long time ago. It’s hard to beat HEB prices and quality on most everything. Even HEB house brands are usually great products.

This is pretty true. I guess I was naive up until last week, or I really never thought about it that much. I picked up the sale ribeyes for $4.77/lb and vacuum packed them individually for the freezer/sous vide. As I tossed the foam flats, I noticed there was a security strip placed under the absorbent mat on each package. I guess they do all their higher end meat with those? I have never seen those tags in their briskets.

I'll pick a place that has self checkout any day. I have no formal training but I can scan and go with the best of them. I like HEB, they usually have so many lines open you don't have to wait. The local Randalls got to where they would have one lane open, no self checkout, and no 15 items of less. If you only needed a few things you had to wait behind four people with their weekly haul. HEB put them out of business pretty quick.

We love the Kroger stores around DFW. We mostly go to the marketplace stores though.

They recently opened an H-E-B near us and itís a good store but the prices are way higher that what we normally pay at Walmart. We normally use the Walmart grocery app and pick up groceries.

I do go to H-E-B for meat and produce. Those are things Iím willing to pay more for.

To me, the thing that really separates grocery stores is the produce and meat section and HEB has the best produce and higher quality meat. It seems like veggies and fruit from Kroger doesn't last long at all. We have a Kroger 5 minutes from us but will drive to Conroe and go to HEB 95% of the time, we only use Kroger for a few items when we're in a pinch.

As for the self check out, I almost prefer to do it myself. The lines are normally shorter and all the produce is looked up my pictures, it isn't that hard. HEB is getting more and more of them it seems to me.

Employees are a huge expense, and even huger pain in the ***, for most businesses.

Self checkout is a hell of a lot better than waiting on 99% of the checkers that get payed to do it, and the whiny *** customers in line ahead of you.
