Default San Angelo White Eyes..end of tale

This buck was a buck I named White Eyes. I had him at no older than 3 1/2 the first year. I figured he'd be the next Big Baby 8. Same area, possible same genetic line. I had hopes of killing him this past year as a solid 140. Problem was, last year, after Thanksgiving, he disappeared. He was a regular at my road feeder and my brother's two feeders. Gold and Cindy even had him at theirs. He was a fine rascal. He was a home body and it was easy to let him go. He also loved the protein in the Boss Buck.

Here he was in 06/07.

Like I said, he was a regular home body. During the season, Dog surprised three guys on the ranch one evening. They were set up to "hunt" dogs supposedly. One was the rancher's nephew. They were set up in the home of White Eyes and another nontypical we named Heartattack Kid. It was at that time that both deer disappeared. We have no proof they shot them, but like they say on NCIS, they don't believe in coincidences. After a month of nonsigtings, we assumed the worse,

This past Saturday, I made a whirlwind trip to SA to fill feeders. It was going to be a month before I could go back, so it was something I had to do. I was alone, had just filled my Hilltop and River feeders and was getting ready to fill my Road Feeder and my truck wouldnt start. Camp is about a mile away. During my couple walks back and forth to try and coordinate an Onstar rescue and/or to find a battery or Polaris, I happened to walk by a patch of catclaw about 30 yards off our main road and there was a skull. I walked over to it and it was White Eyes' carcass. We had driven by him for over a year an not seen him. Best I could discern, he was probably shot off the road at a distance. Being poachers and not supposed to be in the ranch, I imagine they mismarked where he was standing and couldn't find him quickly. From past finds, we know that Pretty Boy was killed with a .223. Not a great round to break down such a big bodied deer. So, he laid there going to waste until I happened to walk by. At least they didn't get him.

Here's his skull. As an 8, he'd score 136 to 137, depending on which of the fork you called the main beam, and as a nine, 139. His H1's at the smallest spot were 4 6/8. He'd have easily been solid 40's the next year.

Here's his jaw. It's been in the weather and the back molars are chipped. The wear shows not much more than 2 1/2 yo wear. NO more than 3 1/2. He's a 4 1/2 yo deer which goes with our wear records of being older than the wear shows. At least one year.

I think when the standards for wear were made, it was probably in an overpopulated hill country area, which for most of the past it has been such, where they browsed a lot on hard limbs, etc. On our ranch, there's a lot of cropland holding cotton, wheat, corn, milo. They eat a lot of horsetail and leaves and not as much hard forage that wears the teeth. For whatever the reason, they don't have the wear here that the standards would show. They are almost always a year or two older than the jaw shows. The Junco shows at least 2 years difference.

Great post, Doc. Hate it that it happened, but glad you found him. Better than him being on some poachers wall, that's for sure.

I had a daily "regular" that hasn't shown up since around the first of February. I hope he's just moved areas, but I can't help but wonder considering that I'm located in the middle of a busy oilfield where there is traffic on the place at all times of the day and night.

There's always that worry when you let one walk. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose.

We also found a deer that we called the freak. He was dead near our property line off the river. He could have been another poacher casualty or just crossed a boundary, got shot, and made it back before he died. It's a deer that Yardboss chased all year, so my nephew gave her the skull. Maybe she'll post the pics.

John,I know you've had a issue loosing deer from the neighbors and Landowners Nephews but do you think any of these deer died of natural causes?
I'm just asking because we find deer every year that had to of died from natural causes and not poaching.........I think one of my leases had 3 just this past season.........and another had a couple. I do believe we have lost a few to maybe the highway/neighbors wounding a deer and wondering back to die on our side but those deer are always near the property boundaries in my experiences. I always get suspicious when I find one near the borders of our properties but not the ones deeper on the ranch "We don't have the problems like yall do though" with inside trespassing. I did have one unique deer come in and stay on my feeder this past season though. He had a huge open wound to his neck apparently from a gun shot that took about half of his neck meat off one side and was still bleeding some.....ouch!!!!! I watched this deer for 2 months and it's amazing how fast a deer can heal up from such an injury and seemingly healthy the entire time. Long story short this deer coming to this feeder is far from any of the boundary lines and had to of traveled miles from where he got shot initially.........always leaves me never underestimating the home range of a deer.

Dang, Gold, you cleaned up the freak's head nicely. Maybe I'll get White Eyes to you.

The story on the Freak goes back to the year that Pretty Boy was poached. Later that year, we had all the cards stolen from Dog's cameras at his protein and corn feeder. Same place that Pretty Boy had been shot. The only deer that disappeared that we knew of was a young 10 that I called Baby Crab 10. He was going to be a tremendous deer. Typical 10 with kickers as a 2 1/2 yo. He was a regular at Dog's and my feeders. We gave him up for dead.

Last year, Cindy brought in pics of the Freak. There was something familiar about the deer but I couldnt put my finger on it. I went through my files trying to find a deer similar to him and when I got to the Baby Crab 10, bam, there he was. Same facial features. What I believe happened was that the poacher had found a good place to sit above Dog's feeder and watch it. When he shot Pretty Boy, he left a cigarette butt, a throat lozenge, and the cartridge casing. Seeing that it worked so well, he went back later and shot the BC10. When he checked for the deer, he got himself captured on camera. All 4. Only thing to do was to steal the cards. The buck undoubtably got away, wounded. We didn't see him, or at least didn't recognize him the next year as he recovered. Last year, he came back as the Freak. At least Cindy got to keep the skull. I'll dig out pics of the BC10 tomorrow.

You always lose a few. Problem is, these are not deer that are disappearing after the season or rut when they're run down. They are "here today and gone tomorrow deer". I only get concerned about the home deer. Those that are regular as rain. White Eyes was at one of our feeders every day. He was in peak condition from what you can see. Odds of another one of our deer killing him is not great. Also, almost every carcass that we find is within 100 yards of a road. I found three this past weekend while shed hunting. White Eyes was about 30 yards off a road, a young 7 was about 50 yards off a road. The only other carcass that I found was one I knew that I shot last year. He was a sick deer with a green, oozing abscess that we called Pus Pocket. It was a mercy killing and I knew the area where he died. Two years ago, we found 8 buck carcasses within 100 yards of our road on the south near the Feed Lot. If they were scattered about the lease, I'd say most were natural mortality. The proximity to the roads of the majority of the carcasses indicates something else. I also don't comment on the deer that are border deer that disappear. I could run a pretty good thread of those deer that disappear, but that's just part of a low fence property. You lose those deer. It's the internal deer that chap my hide. Freak was probably a border loss. White Eyes was internal. Pretty Boy was definately internal. Lucky was definately internal. I lost a camera at his pen during that time. I figure once again that he was shot around my pen and they had to take or disable the camera to remain anonymous. We have so many cameras on the place that eventually they'll get caught.

Sticknstring, I went back to the carcass Sunday morning. I KNEW where it was and you still couldn't see it from the road. I turned the carcass over and checked the legs to see if there were any broken bones, but he had been out there for almost a year and a half and it was in such bad condition that I couldn't tell.

I don't think so Robyn. Freak has the same black face characteristics as BC10. Sweeper had more of a brownish face. When I look at Sweeper, I don't see, and didn't see, BC10. When I looked at the Freak, I KNEW I had seen him in the past. When I dig out the pics, I think you'll agree. It's possible maybe, but I'd say the possibility is low.

Man.....that's hard to swallow John..........I had no idea yall lost those kind of numbers internally. I hear ya on the home body deer coming up missing as well.......that's for sure a problem I don't want. For what its worth I still think you have done a great job with the deer in the area. I'm still working on ours and yet to kill a deer above 140 class but seen deer in the 150 class "always not in deer season" lol ........letting a boat load of deer walk and feeding year round I hope to change that.

I HATE poachers! Sounds like you have a heck of a problem with all the dead deer you are finding near your roads. On a positive note, at least the poachers arent stealing your trailcameras....that would add insult to injury!

OK, here are the pics of BC10 the year he disappeared.

He holds his head at a severe upright position like the Freak. He's gray like the Freak. Sweeper is a brownish colored deer. He has the black "Y" like the Freak. Sweeper has a more monotone face. When I look at BC10, I see the Freak in the face.
