I've always liked the idea of letting 8s get to 5.5 unless they are just really inferior (small frames, short brows, narrow, ect.)

I think he is 3.5.. We start shooting our 8's at 4.5 for the most part. Really crappy 3.5's that are 8's will get shot as well. I have no problem shooting them.

We do make exceptions with 8's that have extremely large frames and potential but for the most part they are what they are.

The average mature buck in Texas is around a 120" 8 point if I'm not mistaken. The key is to shape your bell curve towards the exception.. 10+ points on a deer, if higher scoring deer are your goal... If you are simply wanting to kill mature big deer, you let everything get old, regardless of points.

Most places I've seen that personally employ killing all mature 8's are generally the better managed properties. There are exceptions to every rule though

He's a really nice deer. That being said, I would have to let him get at least one more year. We had an 8 at our lease that was a 3.5YO in my best estimate and looked real similar. The next year, at 4.5 he grew a split in his G2. You just never know at that age what they're going to do.
