Default Scared out of my mind driving on a bridge

Driving to see some family staying in Austin, and the shortest way was 281 north to 290 east then I-35 north
Well all was fine till the 290 to I-35 exit ramp over pass , I have never been on any other bridge so high and narrow with low cement railing . I ventured glancing out my left window and all I could see was air and how high up this bridge is I really wanted to slam on the break and walk down .
thousands of people drive this horrible bridge ramp every day I just donít have my man card I guess

Drove over a bridge that was under construction when they were tearing it out to replace with a new one late one night and nobody was around. They had a deter sign up but I decided to take a short cut. Not the smartest thing I've ever done but I didn't collapse the bridge and die. So it all worked out.

It was dark outside and I really couldn't see how bad off the bridge was or how far along the tearing out process was. I just hauled *** across there and thought about it later.

Mine did too. I took drivers ed with Dyson

I was going to type the same thing but honestly I didnít believe my own memories and said naw no way a drivers ed teacher would torment a student with driving over that bridge

Riding with my parents in 1960 I witnessed a fatal accident crossing the old Galveston Causeway, roll-over head-on collision right at the top of the hump. Been scared ever sense crossing any high bridge.

I also hate high overpasses and don't understand why they have to be so danged high.

I understand needing clearance and all, but don't get the need to scrape the stratosphere with the roof of my truck.

I was no fan of the Rainbow bridge when I used to travel that way.

I don’t like the bridge crossings in some of the Western States. The one made out of square grate that you can see through. Have no idea why they bother me but when you are crossing and can hear it

Iíll never forget- we were coming home from the lease one night when I was probably 10-12 yo. We took my papawís old ford pickup because the trusty olí ram charger was not so trusty this particular trip. It was so foggy coming over the bridge, the overhead lights on the bridge were not visible. could not see the guardrail or the lane markers. To this day I have no clue how my step dad didnít slam into the guard rail. Will never forget that.

Living in Houston we have a bunch of high one lane over passes that force you to make a 90% turn at the highest point. Half of the way up the ramp you start wondering if your vehicle will actually make it to the top. I don't mind 2 and 3 car ramps. It's the 15 footers that I have stopped doing...........

Highest bridge I can think of that I have actually been on was the one at Baton Rouge

Like driving up the side of a mountain and made out of metal grating adds a twist

Does not scare me but definitely a differ not feeling and make you hope the folks that built it were on their A game

The ole Huey P that crossed the Mississippi river to NOLA was crazy when we were kids. A train ran down the center which made the whole bridge sway. As a teenager we walked across it due to an accident. Not gonna deaux that again.....lol!

Back in the 70's, the bridge that connects I635 to 175 East in S/E Dallas county. What I used to think was a tall bridge back in the day.

Yea, my dad decided to take his work van, with me in it, up and over during a huge black ice storm. We got to the top. And all I remember is dad saying "Oh shiat, get down in floor kid, and hurry". We slid all the way down that bridge banging off each guardrail multiple times in a top heavy Chevy work van. How we didn't go over the edge remains a mystery.

I was so mad at my dad, he didn't even try to use the "arm seat belt" to save my little butt.

Its a small bridge to me now, but for some reason I still get a little puckered up going over that one..lol

That one sure makes me pucker.

Not particularly "scared". It's just thoughts of who built em. I've been in construction and maintenance for quite a while(50 years) and seeing how some do their jobs will make you stop and worry.....er, uh wonder.

I grew up in Pt. Arthur and drove over the Rainbow Bridge often. I hunted and fished with a buddy that lived near there. We rode our bikes everywhere.

When we were about 15 years old we decided to push our bikes to the top and ride down. It's a wonder we didn't die that day.

Ahhhh, that was you? Im really surprised how many people on here lived in the GT.

Couple of guys I went to school with, were having a Senior party at the McFaddin or Crystal Beach. Well, Pickett had a 50s model Chevy truck that died almost at the top and wouldn't start. They started rolling backwards, they went all the way down backwards, that was when it was a two traffic bridge. It was funny to say the least.

Default The old (pre I-20) bridge over the Mississippi.....

at Vicksburg (****, I'm giving my age away) was a real terror.

It was OPENED in 1930 on old Highway 80. 9 foot wide lanes and only two of them. A railroad bridge ran right beside you on the same structure. Quite a thrill on a dark, rainy, or icy night when meeting traffic AND having a train beside you too.

The I-20 Bridge didn't open until 1973.

The I-10 bridge going into Lake Charles is a doozie. Not so much until you realize how dilapidated it is. I cross it 10-20 times a week and I just know that SOB is gonna collapse with me on it one day!

The Rainbow Bridge scarred me for life. Going over that thing as a kid absolutely ruined me. I had recurring nightmares. Then starting around 40 years old I get vertigo going up steep bridges. Crazy stuff

Wow, some of you better not go out west. There are several roads with no shoulder, no guardrail, and a nice plunge to the bottom. I'd especially recommend staying off the jeep trails. As to the overpass the OP is mentioning, I usually do about 60 on it.

My problem is bridges. Specifically going up them. Going down is no problem. Going up mountains, no problem. Ski lifts, no problem. Steep bridges? I've got a white knuckle grip on the tiller. Its weird

Google “gephyrophobia” - it is a fairly common anxiety disorder and can really be debilitating. No matter how rational you are otherwise once a phobia like this takes root it is hard to turn off the mental and physical reactions. I am familiar with this because I have a family member that suffers from it bad. She can kind of handle it in the passenger seat but there is no way she can drive over a tall bridge. Heart starts racing, blurred vision and hyperventilating. It really restricts where she drives because she lives in Lake Charles.

Remember the old Vicksburg bridge very well. Meeting a tractor trailer would make your britches or something draw up real tight. The tractor drivers would put the right side tires against the curb. That way they knew they were safe crossing.

Not necessarily the scariest bridge, but several years back, my cousin was driving on the 610 East bridge over the Houston Ship channel and a crane on a passing ship struck the bridge causing a multi-vehicle accident. He was right in the middle of it. Most the vehicles involved were totaled. Crazier is that nobody was seriously injured. I've never crossed the bridge since without thinking about that.

Man so she basically canít travel west of LC.
