Was wondering what you guys might have to say about some of the “unwritten rules” of a deer camp. Just hopped onto my first lease as a paying member (grew up hunting on a lease with my father) and was curious about some of the do’s and don’ts. Simply curious to hear out some of y’all!

Probably- do unto others as you would want to do to you, (or something like that), as simple as it can be. And don't be an ars.

What happens at deer camp, stays at deer camp. (For the kiddos)
If something needs done, and people are doing it, help, or fetch beers. Don’t ask what you can do to help, just help. If you eat, and didn’t cook, wash the dishes. If you set at the fire, help get firewood. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Don’t be a slob around camp. As dumb as this sounds clean up after yourself, empty the trash cans when you leave. Make sure there is firewood left for the next guy.

Any of you guys take the wives/girlfriends out? My girl has been wanting to get into hunting.. which I love.. but I don’t want anyone uncomfortable with her around. Has anyone had issues with this in the past? Seems silly but I know a lot of guys head out to the ranch to get away. The fellas at my place seem ok with it.

Don't eat the steak if you brought noodles!
Puke as far away as possible! Don't poke the fire if you ain't a fire poker! The best seats around the fire pit are based on age! Must be atleast 40 yrs old to choose music! No empty ice chests! |

Just like in life...be respectful and lend or at least offer help to your fellow lease mates. I get irritated at folks who stay hidden in their trailers and are MIA when there’s always camp chores, filling feeders or blind builds-repairs needing to get done.
Also, don’t be a cheap aZZ when it comes to bringing groceries and libations. I’m not saying you have to FINANCE everyone on your dime ALL THE TIME, but there are ways to do your part, contribute and just not be a **** freeloader. On every lease trip I always try to bring enough food to supply everyone in camp at least 1 meal on my own (i.e. a big pot of chili or beans, tablitas or sausage for the grille, etc) I’ll almost always have extra liquor, beer or moonshine available to share as well. For the most part, what’s mine is your’s in deer camp. |

Don't leave less than 1 sleeve of oreos. Don't eat tuna fish. Don't forget the moon pies. Bring lots of beer to share. Don't be sloppy. Don't be loud. Don't speak. Don't squat with your spurs on.

Take your trash home with you or whatever is accumulated while you are there.
Offer to help at the skinning rack, but keep your advice low key unless it's asked for. I usually bring my blade and follow their lead. There are 27 ways to do it, most are ok enough to get it done. Give up your unused ice as you leave to whoever is staying behind. And a habit you will pick up- when you see a bargain or are about to send something to the curb your brain will say- "can we use that at deer camp". Quality needed stuff at camp is fine, junked up old stuff probably best to stay home. |

If it’s unwritten then it’s not a rule.
I agree with all the things mentioned above. I have been running a deer camp for 30 years. Cleaning up after yourself is a big one. The key is to have hunters that are good enough people not to need rules. The ones that are leaving trash, drinking everyone else’s beer, eating steaks when they show up with hot dogs, burning firewood every weekend they never cut, they don’t get invited back on the hunting lease. |

A bar of soap in a tube sock will stop people from snoring.
I guess that's not so much a rule as it was an observation. I know its a rule now. Last edited by Hoggslayer; 03-04-2021 at 06:39 AM. |

Be respectful of others. After a certain time keep the noise level down. Clean up after yourself and volunteer to hep. Don't wait to be asked. If you need to go to town to get supplies ask if anyone else needs anything while you are out.

Don’t shoot a buck if you show up to camp in your Toyota Corolla commuter, with no knife, cooler, or ice. Don’t get butt hurt when your buddies give you a hard time about it.

Leave it better than you found it.
If the whiskey is hidden, it is off limits. If the whiskey is sitting out in the open, it is fair game, but should be replaced. Bring too much ice and water. |

Don't be a Richard and hold others to the same standard.
Don't be too busy to help throughout the summer but magically find time to show up opening weekend. Don't be surprised at some of the BS you may soon encounter (not sure how well you know your lease members). Hunting (like kids sports) brings out the best in some and the worst in others. |

If you fall asleep sitting around the fire you get what you get with no right to complain.
If you bring a skank from the VFW to camp you are responsible for her. Keep her in your camper and get her out of camp before the sun rises. |

Clean not just before you leave but stay clean and picked up. Enjoy the people you share it with and don't be petty. And if you try to wake scott up early after he was on the front porch singing and drinking jack until 3am he will threaten to kill you and make a lot of groaning noises but he's harmless so force him to get up

Reminds me of a funny story. I took my oldest son to deer camp for the first time when he was 7. I told him exactly this. He/we had a great time that weekend with all the other guys there. Monday morning after I left for work his mom was making his lunch and getting ready to take him to school. She asked him, so what did yall do at the lease? He says, I cant tell you. What happens at deer camp stays at deer camp! When I heard about it that evening I couldnt stop laughing.

I have a friend who is a recovering alcoholic and been in AA for years. My un- written rule is no booze when he is up . I/we try and support him as much as I can.
But it is easy for me I quit drinking in 1971 and when my wife was alive she didn't drink at all. |

Here is an absolute law... do not pull card on your lease mates cameras unless he ask you too.
Along the same lines, do not mention the huge buck your buddy showed you on his phone while sitting around the fire with the entire group. Last edited by GarGuy; 03-04-2021 at 10:09 AM. |

Be part of the team. Down in South Texas with 20 miles of a road from hell to get to the lease we didn't make many runs into town.
One of the guys had a big fuel tank in the bed of his truck for diesel. He'd run it out then fill it up with gasoline in Freer. Yea I know, but anyway, he would fill up everyone's lease ride and spare gas cans with that fuel saving everyone a lot of trouble. Someone mentioned it but work days are important. That is when you find out who pulls their own weight. If you can't make a work day contribute more money to the feed or electric bill but do not miss many. Most folks that I have hunted with over the years do not tolerate lazy people. Girls in camp. We had a rule, no women the first weekend. After that they were welcome, wives, girlfriends mistresses it didn't matter, But there was a caveat to that. If a man needs to pee he's going to do it and not hide himself any more than he would from the other guys so make sure your female companion understands that. In other words we won't flash it at her but we're not going to go out of sight just to take a leak. ![]() Lots of good thoughts above, bring more food than you need. When you're at Sam's or Costco pick up a box or two of the barrel liners and leave them at camp, paper towels and plates and bowls. Use Groupme.com to communicate with everyone on the lease. If you're going to buy corn ask if anyone else needs any if you have room on your trailer. If you're buying cotton seed totes ask if anyone needs some for their feed pens. Working together as a team is so much better than being an individual. |
