Advice needed for Nikon Zoom lens

I have a Nikon D40 and am looking to purchase a zoom lens for hunting and sports photos. Any suggestions? I'm a novice and don't really know where to start.

If anyone has one for sale let me know. Thanks.

Call Houston Camera Exchange and see what they have used for your camera.

Which sports? Indoors or outside? Daytime or under the lights?
Wildlife photography has the same requirements as most sports photography.

If you are shooting outside during the day, you can get away with pretty much any zoom lens. You will have enough light to get your shutterspeed up.

If, however, you are going to shoot indoors or at night under the stadium lights, or wildlife at dawn and dusk, be prepared to drop some serious cash on a lens.

My daughter shoots a D40 and I bought her a Tamron 28-300 about a year and a half ago. While I was not going to drop a lot of coin on fast glass for her, she is happy with the lens. If you are shooting outdoors, it is a pretty good little lens for all around shooting. Lens runs about $419 dollars at B&H.
