    I would guess that cabbage is a takeoff from sauerkraut, which is a New Years tradition from the Midwest

                Glad to know this. I have a Neighbor from Mississippi that brought me some Purple Hulls from there. Can’t duplicate the taste on local or East Texas Purple Hulls.

                Peas on New Years Day is for Luck, Cabbage (or Greens) is for Money in the upcoming year.

                  I love BEP’s, gotta be fresh and cooked in chicken broth.
                  I love them as is but also like to put a big scoop of pico in the bowl with the peas. You are missing out on cornbread and pea juice as well.
