Doug, I’m sorry you were treated that way. As a proud Texas Tech graduate, I hope you know I would drop anything I was doing to help you in a time of need, Aggie or not.

Yes I know you would as most on here would. This was back in the late 70's and early 80's, but has not happened in a long time. Lots of friends that have Tech connections or graduates.
Best thing that happened to us was when we went to the SEC and did not have to play Tech, they always seemed to have or number, especially with the Pirate at the helm. My disdain has lessened over the years but still do not like them, but that is just me.

Yes, and he could bring the mullet back to prominence in Lubbock! Not sure who they are going to hire, but get the boosters to shell out the big bucks and hire someone with a big name and who knows, Tech could start bringing in some 4 and 5 star players and contend again.
Leach got the most out of the players he recruited, more than any other coach Tech has had in a long time.

Nick Saban. LOL. Offer him $200,000,000 for 10 years. Now let’s see the boosters pony up for that!!

Ok I don’t know anything about TTU but a buddy of mine posted this on Facebook earlier today and I thought y’all might get a kick out of it.

I love Texas Tech and west Texas. Whom ever it is. Still gonna have the same ole problems of recruiting the 4-5 even 3 star high level defensive lineman it takes to win a Big XII title to the High Plains! Nobody really stops anybody in the conference. You might aswell keep on keeping on with the high flying offenses!

I would love to see Gundy up there.

Mike Leach gets credit for doing more with lesser recruits, and that credit is warranted. Myself, I think he should get more credit than he does for being a great evaluator of talent.

He's a great coach, and a fantastic talent evaluator....it ain't about the stars.

Local news (KCBD)is reporting Hocutt is negotiating with Utah State coach Matt Wells. This hire seems like a failure in the making. He does not have a winning record against teams with winning records. He coaches in a sub-par conference. I wasn’t looking for a “splash” hire but one that would instill confidence, this does not do it. I boldy predict we will be on the search again in 4 years. With the hire of Les Miles at KU, I could see TTU at the flat bottom of the big 12. Hope I eat these words but don’t think I will.

Lots of blind faith in Hocutt among TTU fan base. But let’s review the facts of his hires. Chris Beard- Win. Tadlock- Win. Billy Gillespie- loss. Kingsbury- loss. Tubby Smith- tie. Candace Whitaker- abject failure. Marlene Stollings- too early to tell.

Looks like Hocutt’s hiring record is 2-3 & 1. That’s about the same win % as the football coach he just fired. Maybe “elite” does not dwell in the corner office to begin with

If Wells doesn't pan out it's time to get Kirby out...guy is the 5th highest paid AD in the country. Wells won't last three full seasons...

Nobody knew who Mike Leach was back in 2000 either.

I’ll trust Mr. Hocutt and see what happens.

Kirby is 0 - 2 in football hire's...Golden at Miami and Kliff at Tech. The pressure is on, rank and file alumni aren't real happy. Wells isn't going to get ticket renewals going and next years schedule looks very tough...could be a three win season unfortunately...

Tech is definitely up there from a business point. But it's hard to recruit with the choices in TX and the surrounding area (Texas, A&M, OU, etc.). Tech's revenue would need to be 2x to keep up with the big name teams. Not sure if that will happen anytime soon.

Declined to interview Holgerson despite him being interested in taking the job.... I know the mountaineers wont be near as good next season (So does Holgerson, obviously) but why would you not want to take a guy from a team in your conference? And a guy that wants to be your coach that is proven?!

Sounds like we really like Wells.

What’s not to like! He took a 5-3 team to a 1-7 record his 1st year and edged them up to a 7-1 record in a mediocre conference and a division where 4 of 6 teams were .500 or worse. That’s defined “elite” right?

He’s going to crush it at USC! Wish him well. He will have his pick of quality qb’s and running backs to support the pass game

Wouldn’t be surprised if Alan Bowman transfers

Bowman was great but the kid had 2 collapsed lungs in 1 season. Dont think his future will be in football and I hate to say this, USC will have 10 "Bowman's" lined up.

Don't know much about Wells but I do know a little about McIvor and I sure was wanting him at Tech. He tore his knee up early this year but is a great athlete and comes from a pretty good pedigree. He won lots of games for a San Angelo Central team that did not have a lot of talent.
Adios,
Gary

Possible transfers of players, his recruiting success or lack of success and season ticket sales will show what a bunch of players and people in Lubbock think about this hire. Lot's of fair weather fans the last couple of years in Lubbock and those are the ones that complain the most.
Looks like he has had a high scoring offense, but also plays a pretty good defense according to stats.
Time will tell as it is with every coaching change.

I was pulling for Dana but Wells might not be too bad. Read a lot on him and the guy is highly respected throughout the county by his peers and players. He, and especially his brother Luke (former OU player and Coach) have a strong history of recruiting TX hard and are very well received by Texas High School coaches. He completely turned around a Utah State team that had 1 winning season prior in the schools history with minimal resources and players. So the dude grinds.

I do like the OC he is bringing in, Yost. He is a proven spread offense guy and worked under Leach for a while at WSU as WR coach, so he's familiar with the Air Raid O. Prior to WSU and USU, he was the OC for Mizzou when they were in the Big 12 with Chase Daniels. That O was very effective and ran lots of double TE fronts.

The DC, Patterson, not as optimistic on him per his track record at other Power 5 Conference jobs but who knows. He is an Ex TX high school football coach so that is a plus with recruiting.

Overall, I was not thrilled on the hire at first but I don't think it's near as bad as people are reacting. National Writers, Coaches and Peers all think it's a home run hire so time will tell. He was able to do A LOT with almost nothing at USU so I'm hoping he can do the same with a lot more at Tech.

I think most of the backlash from the fan base is bc Kirby came out and hyped up a big hire and used the word "Elite" 20 different times in his press conference when the search was underway so people, including myself, were expecting a big money hire. Then when reports broke that Kirby would not even interview Dana, who wanted the job, fans and donors lost it. Not too sure if this was the big upgrade people expected, especially over Kliff from an offensive perspective. Almost seems like a horizontal move.

I am hoping for the best and obviously hope the guy can hit the ground running and win but time will tell. Thus far, Football has been about the only thing Kirby has not been able to master.

He actually decommitted this morning but sounds like he is still open to Tech. With early signing being 2 weeks away, i get why he would open back up the recruitment bc no one wants to be left without an offer with new coaches coming in. It happens a lot.

I hope that they can keep McIvor in the class. If he comes back healthy, can be a difference maker and might help recruiting across West Texas a part of the state that Tech used to own.

I've read just about all I can find on Wells and honestly, this "MAY" be a BIG hire for TTU!

FB is just about the LAST Athletic program we do NOT compete and for that matter..shine not only in the big 12 but nationally as well?!

BUT, TALK IS CHEAP...so hopeful...Gun's Up!
