According to some students that huddled in front of him for A few minutes, he couldn’t get a loaded mag in. He finally told one of them to run. Then they did. If that’s the case, then he couldn’t get it loaded, or it jammed and he dropped it and ran out with the rest of the kids.

I have seen both M16's and M4's take a triple feed of rounds and jam up during intense firing. Sure an AR is more susceptible.
