Here is one that I made into a road feeder.

Just a little physics here. If your feeder is 150 pounds, and you have a simple pulley on a branch in a tree, the force pulling down on the branch is 278 pounds (or 229 pounds, can't remember if its sin or cos) if the winch is at a 45 degree angle. The point is don't underestimate the force on the branch and pulley. Don't go cheap on the pulley. Don't fasten it to the branch with a screw or bolt, use steel cable over the branch. And DONT WALK UNDER IT.

Be careful useing a rope hoist. the squirrels cut the rope at times!
I started useing boat winchs with 1/4" cable with a pully hung with
cable over a leaning tree, mount the pully on the tree to raise and
lower it. Still don't walk under them! leaning tree keeps barrel away
from tree so the bandits can't reach them, squirrels can make the
jump sometimes.

Good question, how do you clean them out, just called the lube place after reading this thread and they had one and leaving it out back for me to pick up. Trhink I will make atv feeder/spreader or convert my 5 gallon. What solution will get the lube out. Do they generally have lids or do you cut a lid? Where can you get a lid?
