    Snake ID

Found this little fella on the kitchen floor this morning. I don't kill beneficial snakes or spiders so I really need an identification before putting it in the yard. Any ideas? The quarter is for scale.

Harmless to be sure, but is that an actual species or a "catch all" name?

actual species. could also be a rough earth snake. I struggle identifying between the two.

I'm going to call that a juvenile decays snake.

Some people call them Weed Eater snakes. Harmless Rough Earth Snake. They are sow bug eating machines. https://www.dirtdoctor.com/garden/Ro...ake_vq1680.htm

A Texas Brown snake has faint stripes and spots on it's body and grows quite a bit larger. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_brown_snake

                Ok. Thanks.

I figured it was a beneficial bug eater. Definitely small bugs only for now.

Yep, Rough Earth Snake, and he's about as big as he'll ever get too... They'll hang around your porch or patio if you leave your lights on at night... Little suckers can eat some June bugs!
