Congrats on a great hunt. I remember getting buck fever when with my son on youth hunts. Love it.

Man that's awesome. What a great adventure for a young man.
Looks just like that country I hunt in New Mexico. Amazing what can hide in that grasp and in those dunes

Did they say what qualified that buck as "management" ? And curious on the weights of the doe and buck, did y'all weigh them?

The buck if I had to guess weighed around 250 pounds. Maybe a tad more. The deer wasn't weighed on a scale.

The rack on the buck was somewhat non typical (had extra splits and a small "kicker"). The forks weren't super deep and he had smaller mass throughout even on his tines than some of the same age class deer. That's what the biologist said. However on the youth hunt I believe there was a little bit of leeway on the buck that could be shot. On the adult hunts I believe there's really not as much wiggle room for what's shot (but its a much longer hunt of 5 days compared to a day and a half on the youth hunt so there's more time to get on a buck).

Congrats! Hunting deer in that wide open prairie is no easy feat. Who was the biologist assigned to your son?
