Calibers that have come and gone

What calibers have you seen that became super popular for several years and then ended up falling out of style and becoming hard to find?

I’m curious because you hear all this talk about the 6.5cm being a fad and will eventually go away. Has there ever been a caliber as popular as the 6.5cm that eventually disappeared or became harder to find.

.222 Remington has faded away some. Used to be the king in shooting matches and truck guns.

220 Swift does not seem to be all the rage anymore either.

My first deer rifle was a 222 still have it I plan on passing it on to my nephew's son when he gets old enough to hunt.

Too many good choices in the highly efficient 6.5 size to go away.

I think the 7mm-08 hurt the 7mm Mauser as far as popularity goes.

There has been a lot calibers come and go, some of the classics continue to hang around like the 22 Hornet.

I dont see them Nosler calibers becoming real popular. Time will tell with the 6.5 CM.

244 Rem came then turned into 6mm rem with a new twist

280 rem came ,re-badged 7mm rem then back to 280 rem

and then list of those that came and here to stay 223/243/270/308/30-06/30-30 and maybe 6.5 something and maybe 7mm something

Ones that I have personally seen:

                      7mm STW
                      the WSM family
                      any bottle necked rimfire
                      357 sig
                      260 Rem
a lot of the AR hybrids

                      Going back in history:

                      222
                      222 Magnum
                      264 Winchester Magnum
                      300 H&H
                      7-30 waters
                      the Weatherby line

We as shooters are a fickle bunch, whats popular today can be gone tomorrow and vice versa. I can remember when the 22 Hornet and 45-70 almost disappeared. I can also remember when the 7mm STW was on every magazine cover and praised in every publication. Will the 6.5 CM go away? Highly unlikely and it will probably continue to be a factory offered cartridge but I see it's current popularity waning as the kool aid wears off. Every new cartridge offered in a factory gun is designed to increase gun sales, not fill a need, which is great for the gun industry. A strong gun industry only strengthens our gun rights.

I must admit, I am interested in the 6.5cm. Time will tell.

.450 Marlin. I still have one and absolutely love it.

I second the 5mm. My grandfather had one and passed it down to my dad. It was a nice little gun, rimfire and 20 grains or something like that. It hits pretty hard for varmints in the 50-80 yard range though.
