Default State Parks Across Texas

I know there are ALOT of state parks across this great state and I'm sure many of folks on here have visited them. Since we just bought our new 5th wheel I'm looking to get some use out of it. Any recommendations as to what you guys have experienced and the best places to go and visit, will be a family of 4 with 2 kiddos that are 7 & 3 yrs. old. Thanks in advance!

As mentioned above the Texas Hill Country parks are very nice, but I steer clear of them during the summer. Inks lake and Garner are mad houses during the summer weekends. Pedernales is not as busy and there is lots of wildlife roaming the park. We spend lots of time at Copper and Atlanta parks up here in east Tx.

Palo Duro is real nice. Also buy an annual Texas State Parks pass. You'll be glad you did.

Your not the first person to recommend that, I'm going to look into getting one of those!

They are very diverse! I'd get a parks guide handbook from one of the state parks and read the summaries of each park. Or, see park descriptions on tpwd.texas.gov Gravitate toward the stuff y'all like to do most. As mentioned earlier, a parks pass(about $70) can save you lots of entry fee money over a year's time.

Any in the hill country are good. Garner SP is probably my favorite down that way. Meridian is good. Up here we like Ray Roberts a lot. Bob Sandlin is good too. In all reality you just need to start taking trips, it won’t take long to figure out which ones y’all like.

Try Kerrville-Schreiner Park in Kerrville. It was a state park and they turned it over to the city. Stay on the "hill" across the road and drive down to the river. The sites on the river side are too close together for me. The "hill" side is wide open with lots of game, clean restrooms and showers. Lots to do in the area. James Avery factory, downtown shopping and the giant cross on the hill is inspiring to tour.

Lots of good State Parks but you better make your reservations now for this summer or you won't be getting in. We used to love going to state parks but its just about impossible to get in unless you book several months in advance

There is a state park app for the iPhone. Not sure about android. You can look at park maps and trail maps. You can also make reservations

I drug a 27' 5th wheel in there on the way back from Inks Lake during spring break one year

The guy in the office there had eyes the size of saucers and wanted to know how the heck I got it in there
That was several years ago so things might have changed. Was a nasty switchback right as you dropped down to the river
I would go check it out first without the trailer

Only place I went that I don't ever care to go again was Mustang Island, about like camping on an abandoned grocery store parking lot with 20 more campers

Don't go to Dinosaur Valley or Mineral Wells in late summer, we about cooked at both places

Lake Whitney
Inks Lake
Eisenhower
Cooper
Tyler
Palo Duro

Are ones I can remember off the top of my head
