use imgur.com you don't have to sign up and you can either copy/paste your photo, drag and drop, or upload it. Once you do this they will give you a URL. It's super easy and quick.

Any updates from last year's hunts? Anyone else get drawn for this hunt?

Ill be out, in Dad mode, on youth weekend Nov10-12.

Claimed his permit and noticed there was no unit # to be found. Anyone know how / when these are assigned? (In the preTPWD days, it was clearly stated on the permit.)

I noticed that too. Gonna call tomorrow to find out but I'm guessing they will probably draw for them at the orientation.

I just got a call returned from Lonnie Castillo (the game warden for Balcones). Once the permits are bought thru the TPWD system, the confirmed list will be passed on to Balcones.

At that time, they will send out follow on emails directly from Balcones. These will give your drawn unit number and details about the orientation.

Yes, Orientation is when you get unit. They will ask if anybody is old and slow and they get to pick first. I used my old and slow card to pick our area. Some ares are a REAL climb and if you shot something in the bottom lands and you are parked on the top...you will have your hands full. The roads thru the place utilize both. If it is real cold, choose a valley area. The whole place is typical Hill country Cedar farm. hard to sneak around because of that. If it is calm and warmish, hunt the tops of the ridges. I did not put if for this year cause it is not 65 year old friendly (in my opinion).

Hope this helps

Wife and son will be going 12/01-12/03 and I'll probably go to help scout and clean up after them. Any pointers?

REALLY REALLY varies per unit.

Some have blinds that you have to use, some are there but only recommended, some have nothing.

4 wheel drive is required for some units (unless you really like to walk) if there is any rain at all. (like unit 7)

Some units are within an AR county, some are not.

You should get an email confirming your unit number. This will come out from Balcones directly before the scouting week.

I hunted unit 1 2 years ago. Saw deer every sit, but wasn't anything I would want to shoot. I hunted the canyon in the back south west corner. I took my 4 wheeler which made it easy to get back there. The other 2 guys that were on the unit stayed in the front section hunting close to the road. I believe one of them shot a spike

My son drew unit 7 for the youth. Haven't seen mmm ugh on it other than that some of the roads are really steep. Looking forward to the hunt in some new terrain!

Finally got my email yesterday and I drew unit 3. Apparently I dont need to worry about doing any scouting this year as it's only 100 acres and I'll be hunting in a stand they provide.

Sounds like you're describing unit 13? Unit 3 is 1,111-acres and is Open.

I scouted Unit 3 today. It took several hours, as I wanted to find a decent list of spots in case my 1st choice or 2 are taken before I get setup. I think it would be easier if they just gave us set cones again this year, but whatever....

I seen some deer at 3PM, which is a good sign. Lots of feeders in adjacent property.
Hopefully they will scare all the deer into the preserve by Nov 10th.

In general, the unit is pretty overgrown and very dry. There are lots of spots that would be promising some years, but the scrub brush is obscuring what would otherwise be good shooting lanes and the tanks are dry.

Ran into a youth hunter with his Dad, so I shared as much info as I could. More important for him to get one in the 1st week than me in the 2nd week. Good luck to all the kiddos this coming weekend.

I went and scouted 10. Found a good little spot by a pond with a lot of sign and bumped some does bedded down. I can only see about 60 yards by 60 yards in this little area. Up top at the back there is a bigger opening thats a good 300 yards by 400 yards. I'm kinda thinking of that spot just because I can see a lot more area and hopefully catching something crossing to the draw down to the pond.

You will be assigned a cone to park at. You can move anywhere around the unit and hunt anywhere but have to park near that cone. A utv would give you more options on where to hunt in the unit.

My son and I will be on unit 7 this weekend also. Think they did away with the parking cones this year, but maybe they will a sign one at check in. Have read that there is some very steep terrain and roads can be difficult for trucks.

A friend and I did a few years ago before twpd took it over. We were at the top of the unit in a box blind they placed there for cone f. It was extremely cold but we got a hog and a doe. I was about to shoot at a big buck but my buddys gun slipped and made a loud thud in the blind and the buck was gone.

We finally saw deer Sunday morning. A mature doe w/ a young buck. The doe spotted us and ran off. The buck followed her. Didn’t get a shot.
Another unit member saw a really nice buck bot same scenario as us.
Heard someone shot a 9 pointer.
That is tuff hunting for an 11 and 13 year old.
