Well I saw a guy in the spot I had picked out in the pasture on 11 and didn't wanna crowd him so yesterday I setup on a spot that I could use my bow at. Didn't see anything this morning so I went to my truck to eat lunch real quick and nobody is out here and there are no blinds or anything setup so maybe he moved or never ended up setting up here. I setup my popup facing the tree line in a good elevated spot in the pasture, so hopefully I do better here. Definitely using my gun in this spot though, wish I had brought something with better range than my 30-30. At 100 yd it starts to drop and just gets worse the further away the shot is. Right now I'm trying to make sure my blind doesn't blow away since its so rocky I can't get the stakes in the ground properly :-).

Same here. Hopefully that spike or a doe walks out tomorrow morning. Gonna enjoy some wings and watch the fights.

Lots of movement this morning. A couple of does before shooting light. A young buck and a very nice tall tined 8 cruised about 70 yards from blind. I hate this doe first rule!!

Biologist said that they didn't get many kills this weekend. So they were pumped when I showed up. Said alot of people complained about coyotes.

2 deer shot all weekend (1 doe and 1 spike). NO hogs. There were tons of animals, but all moving at night. Weather was rough.

We had some fun hunts, and it's beautiful country. We were on hunt unit 7. We never saw 1 deer while scouting or hunting, and we hunted HARD. It's funny that you mention the coyotes. We never said anything to the biologists about them, but we were covered in them, and they looked REALLY healthy. We had 1 literally touch the popup while we were sitting in it. He caught a whiff of us and all hell broke loose. 5 coyotes ran 250 yards up the hill. About 5 minutes later the alpha dog came right back down the hill and straight to the blind, passing 20 yards in front of us in the wide open. Wish i had a camera running.

I'll try again next year.

I heard what sounded like 50 coyotes all howling at the same time just was I was leaving Saturday night. Viper glad to hear you shot something, I wish I had gone there Sunday too after all. I got to Granger and the wind was so bad I wasn't willing to take my boat out in it, and by the time I had driven all the way there and back home to drop my boat off I was too worn out to drive to Balcones after. Well congrats, and it was good to meet you.

Did the check station guys ask ya'll every time you called to check out if you saw anything? You could tell they were really hoping that we would have done better. They seemed like some real good guys out there.

I agree that the staff were all super nice. I'll try again next year for sure.

My lesson learned for next year is to set up a stand or two in heavy cover. I think that there are LOTS of animals there, but they're not used to seeing people. We glassed quite a bit and hunted the edges Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday. Never saw a single deer or hog in the open, but there was so much fresh sign. I think that as soon as the trucks moved in, everything went deep into the woods. Hard to say what the pattern might be, as it was so hot and dry.

I did pass on turkey Sunday evening. By the time I could get a clear shot, they were already beginning to roost. I had to sneak right by their roost on the way back to the truck.

I hunted heavy cover with my bow Friday night and Saturday morning, still didn't see anything. I think it was the weather more than anything. I think they were nocturnal with all the heat.

Mine is showing Hunt Zone 3 for Dec 13-15, which if that's correct is awesome. Unit 3 is about 8 miles from my front door and this year, that date is open season, no doe first requirement.

I drew a permit for this hunt years ago when I lived in Austin. I had a buddy living in Dallas and encouraged him to enter and, lo and behold, he got drawn as well. He and I drew different areas but I scouted early and found a few good places to hunt. He didn't show up til about 9 the night before the hunt and of course wanted to go out and see some of the Austin nightlife.

I will share this secret only to members of the green screen:

The secret to success at Balcones is apparently staying up too late, oversleeping, and hauling tail to your area 15 minutes after the sun comes up.
I couldn't get to my area as I was still half asleep, maybe even a little hungover, and I didn't want to disturb anyone else so I said to heck with it, parked the truck and walked about 100 yards to a grassy clearing. There was a light drizzle and I had just about dozed off when I heard a deer stamp his foot which woke me up. He was at 40 yards, had me pinned down (my rifle was leaning against the bush behind me) but finally snorted and took off. I figured he'd circle to get a better look, which he did, and I had my rifle and anchored him. Smallest spike I've ever seen; 1 armed him into the truck bed and off I go.

The rangers and I were laughing about me being last in and first out and the deer weighed a whopping 72 lbs. I think we pretty much ate him that weekend.

It's a beautiful area and Good Luck all for a successful hunt!

Typically, just find a place with a good view and stay away from the roads. As far as places to stay. There are some LCRA campsites near the refuge on lake travis, but I know in the past people had issues with bringing guns into the campground. Otherwise, you can stay in marble falls, cedar park, or bertram. No camping on the refuge.

Myself and 3 buddies drew Unit 2 the last weekend. This is stand only hunting, wondering how the stands are for bow hunting? When I paid today online it showed that I was assigned blind 1. Any advice or info would be much appreciated. I am newbie as well so can't PM.

Shot my spike outta that unit. blinds are huge and elevated. i have a pic of me in one. ill try to post it up. i dont recommend using bow, i did see quite a few deer in that unit. deer were moving late in the afternoon and moving north to south.
Good luck
