We always put celery, onion, and bell peppers in the base. Holy Trinity brother.

Sha, tomato's are a different story. We called it Red Gumbo growing up. My French(not Cajun) grandma would make seafood gumbo that way.

Bottom line is gumbo is your own. You make it the way you want to. Let your family decide if its good. Chances are they will try to fix you up with a cajun woman as a hint not to cook. Or tell you to bring the chips to the next party.
