Some of the worst pain I have endured was when I was a teenager and got stung by a asp.

Don't let that thing get on your neck or other tender places. Had one fall out of a tree in my front yard this year and hit me on the side of my neck. Thought I had been branded for sure.

One of the docs I work for said when she was a kid that her friend picked one up and rubbed it across her lip (don't ask me why) and said it was soft, split second later she was in severe pain

Those are stinging caterpillars, but not asps. Asps are very thick, with no tufts like those have, all of them suck though.

I've never been stung by the one on your bow, but they might sting. I do not believe it is an ASP though. My above post is what I know as an asp and they hurt like the dickens!!!
