      Lots of manual labor.
Use a Vermeer machine if you go that route. Whatever will fit in the opening of the mulcher, will be mulched.
I was impressed with the Vermeer first time I used one. Impressed enough to rent it a second time. I mulched cedar and some of it was dead and hard. No problem, the machine just had to take its time.

I hired a hydromulcher and he gobbled up 18inch cedar like it was jello

Can you use one of those on a loose brush pile?
I assumed that the tree/brush had to be rooted in the ground.

I wondered the same thing. I called the volunteer fire dept and they basically told me to call the sheriff when I do it and winds must be between 7-20 mph. I thought less wind was better.

If you hydro cedar nothing will grow for a while that you want because the oils in cedar. Best and most economical is burning the piles. I always have a few piles and when the day is right I grab a chair and a garden rake and a cup of coffee and throw a little diesel fuel on there with a road flare and sit back and enjoy. Ive done 100's of these pile sand many as big as a travel trailer and never had an issue as long as I check the forecast and do it at the right time.
