It sucks but it happens to everyone. If the shot was not to far back it could have found no mans land between lungs and spine & he may be fine. I hit one high a few years back I could hear a bull bugle with the heard as the went over the ridge. I assumed it was a satellite trying to gather the cows of the bull I had in my mind just killed, but I followed blood up & over until it eventually stopped. One of the worst feelings you can experience while hunting, but it will pass.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It sucks but it sometimes happens. Learned a ton and I'll be ready to jump back in the saddle for my hunt at the "H".
We're pretty sure the bull is still alive.
I sulked around camp for a bit but decided to go out for dad and Randy's last hunt to take some pics. Had a slow night and a long drive home but we're back in Texas now with no elk meat. Still had a good time minus my snafu. Saw my first bear and my first horny toad. Will be hunting elk again next year for sure.
