Default Drawn Hunts Killing Me

Second year I have applied and the second time my wife and I have got nothing. I applied for every exotic option possible, hogs, and a variety of whitetail draws. Nada. I spent close to $600 the past two years.

By my count I could have taken that money and my wife and I could have both taken a axis doe or had a fun weekend of hog hunting somewhere.

I know its all "luck of the draw" but not sure I will keep applying especially since the success rates on some of these hunts are low even if you do get drawn.

I think I might stop putting in for the draw and start buying exotic meat hunts, at least that is pretty much a guarantee for the freezer.

At least my money is going to conservation.

Anybody else in the same boat as I?

I put in for a few one year. But the excitement wore off quick.
I'll never do it again. DocMay might have some input on this subject.

Drawn hunts are the way to go because you build additional entries every year you are not drawn, as opposed to Big Time Texas Hunts (even though I enter both). But if you expect to win tons of free hunts, save your money. I think if them as buying lottery tickets. One day I might win a hunt I could not otherwise go on.

I think majority of the time it takes years to draw. Start looking on here at the amount of preference points needed to draw. The more exotic the hunt, more sought after. I think there are people with 10-15 years work of points for the mule deer hunts.
I believe many of the easier ones to draw still need 5ish points/years.
Yes, I’m sure there are people who drew with very few or 1, but not great odds.

I only put in for Audad and the youth hunts so it's really cheap and I'm building points, maybe one day I'll get drawn but maybe not IMO it's worth the money to try. Why dont you narrow it down to a few hunts that you really want to go on and save some money.

my suggestion is to pace yourself. I put in for 3 drawn hunts, gun mule deer, guided gemsbok, guided bighorn and three big time hunts. on the big time hunts I just put in one entry a piece, figure I at least have a chance without putting myself out and the parks and wildlife get a few bucks to help with break room coffee. then I take the money I could have used to enter all the low odd drawn hunts, put it toward a trophy unit point in Colorado for elk, take my refund check from the non-drawn out and put that back for next year and do it all over again. am I disappointed when I don't get drawn? sure. but that doesn't stop me from looking forward to next year and the next and the next. if out west isn't your cup of tea or bourbon or whatever, put it toward an exotic doe hunt somewhere and get your hunt in that way.

Preference points don't really count for much in Texas. It's total luck but I have a lease and other places to hunt. I only put in for the premium hunts that are trophy potential hunts or exotics. I've been very lucky overall I would say as I have been drawn 8 times for these hunts since about 2007.
Like said above if the cost of the draw is an issue I would narrow it down to just the hunts and areas you really want to go on or look for hunts with a better entry/permit ratio.

I put in for 21 hunts this year, including epost card hunts. Have an average of 3-4 PP in each category, up to 7 in some. And I didn't draw a hint this year.

I’m not usually getting excited for draws until I’m in the 8 point range and up

I’d narrow down your focus to save money and keep low expectations for a few years. Meanwhile do the axis for hunt with the misses to pass time until you’re selected

No different than Vegas, don't spend more than you are willing to loose. I put in for around 60 each year and pretty much draw every year now. All together in the past 25 years, I have been drawn 16 times (8 times in the 5 years since they made the change to the system a few years ago). But, there are several categories that are hard to draw for that I've never been drawn (15 lps for exotic, 22 lps for pronghorn, 13 lps for gun deer mgmt., 13 for private lands either sex, 12 for gun mule deer, etc.). Maybe cut back on the hunts you really don't care about (hogs?, javelinas?, does?) or the $10 draws that have the longest odds (private lands hunts?), or maybe the areas you really don't care to get drawn for (state park hunts?). But, for sure keep applying for the hunts you like, it'll happen one day.

I wouldnít put in for them anymore if I were you it will give the rest of us who never get drawn better odds

All joking aside, been putting in for a lot of years and have way too many preference points to not have been drawn. Never been drawn for a single one, but my brother has been drawn for several very desirable places so who knows what or how I even works. By far the worst draw hunt system of all the states.

I'm not an expert so I could be misinterpreting but next to each category that I have applied for it shows how many points I have. I put my daughter in the youth draws this year also and it now shows her to have points.

It was a lot cheaper when you could only apply for one WMA in each hunt category and was a $2 fee.

I put in for quite a few years with no draws aside from a doe tag for the Sam Houston forest. Finally drew this year on a hunt I've never applied for previously. I look at it as a donation to TPWD with the off chance it'll pay off.

I put in for 7 states out west and spend around $1500 a year. I am at the point now where I can draw a really quality tag each year.

That said I donít apply here in Texas except for sheep and the grand slam. The draw odds suck and the hunts arenít that great unless you draw a premium hunt.

This is because for the most part Texas hunts are WMA or SP specific with limited space for each hunt thus the small number of drawn hunters each year. But in Kansas for example they draw for separate DMUís which cover the whole state which means they can draw more people. Kansas doesnít provide any assistance in securing a property to hunt on with the exception of walk in hunting areas.

It is luck of the draw no doubt but there is still a good chance to go on a cool hunt. I got drawn for Brazos Bend State Park with 3 loyalty points. I know it isn't a big deer area but it is essentially a free hunt and I get to check out a new area. I understand it is costly if you apply for a lot of the big ones but it can happen for sure. I never planned to win a hunt but I figure it is going to a good cause..........and there is always a chance to win the big one as many TBHers have shown.

Just to blow a bee up everyone’s bonnets, I got drawn this year and I’ve never put in for a single hunt. My buddy called me last week, said he put both our names in for a bunch of hunts (his first year) and we drew feral hogs at Choke Canyon.

Agree!!! I donít do draw hunts. When Iím ready to hunt a particular animal, I find out where I can go and pay to hunt that animal. Personally I like being able to plan the hunt.

So until you get 8 preference points, I would not put in for more than 1 draw in each category (unless you are talking archery, which is easier to draw). This lets you build pref points for much cheaper.

But to be honest, most of the hunts are "meh" anyway. My group of 3 people had 10 preference points each and drew Kerr rifle hunt last year... In the entire hunt I think 2 decent bucks were killed out of 20+ people. Yeah, it was fun, but I wouldn't bank on some great hunt.

The entire draw hunt system in Texas should be changed IMO. One issue is they should force a valid Texas hunting license before you can apply. Another is they should do all the draws MUCH MUCH MUCH earlier in the year.

Texas is not a true preference point system like Wyoming. In Wyoming, if you have max points in a category you are almost guaranteed to draw. In Texas, if you have 30 points for Pronghorn, your odds are 30 times greater than a person with 1 preference point but 30 times 1/7000 is still lousy odds.

I must be lucky as hellll. I’ve been puttin in for draws for 5 years now. First the years I got nothing and these last years, including this year, I have drawn 7 total. 3 last and 4 this year. I do and don’t understand the attitude towards a luck of the draw system. It’s no garauntee so I may go years without a draw now. I don’t put in in hopes of getting a premium hunt every time but getting to hunt somewhere new. The hunts I’ve been on have been challenging and fun. I haven’t killed anything yet so my public hunt quest will continue until I get something down.
