The guys on the lease called this deer Old Fart. He has been around the three years I have been on the lease and seemed old when we first saw him. This year our lease manager decided he needed to go. I took my wife to hunt him two weeks ago and unfortunately the only time she saw him, it was too dark to shoot.
This past weekend I headed down to the lease and the wind was right for the stand he and another cull buck were frequenting. The other cull is called Tiger Stripe and I saw him on each of my first two sits but could not get a good shot. This morning he came in again with several other bucks and does. I was trying to get ready to shoot when Old Fart jumped into the pen and all the other deer cowered out of his way.
I changed gears and set my sights on the new and bigger deer. He turned broadside and I slowly drew while trying to keep track of all the eyes around him. As I moved the pin on his chest, he turned quartering away. I adjusted my aim and released. I don't know if he moved or I just hit further back than I had aimed but I was worried about the shot as he stumbled out of the pen.
I waited an hour and a half for Bruce (Archery1st) to finish his hunt and together we took up the trail. We did not find any blood but I thought I had heard him crash a little while after the shot. I walked to the area where I thought I had heard him and he was down for the count after a 60 yard dash. The arrow had indeed ended up further back than I thought but caught the liver, a lung and the heart as it went up the chest cavity.
The old guy weighed 214 lbs on the hoof and scored 132.
Thanks for following along.
