I read an explanation that it is the speaker you are listening to. Played it for the shop Friday and we split 50/50

The way I understood the science is the frequency that you process sound. If you can detect higher frequencies you will hear one over the other, and if your hearing detects lower frequencies you will hear the other.

That can be artificially offset by increasing low frequency tones (bass) on the speakers which are producing the sound.

My wife and I heard Laurel, but my young son, unprovoked, repeated Yanny after us telling him repeat what he heard... very very interesting... we were all three sitting there hearing the same thing and getting different results amongst us! Crazy
