Default Big Deer Like to Die...

Every year we lose a big deer or two. Another gut punch this morning. First picture is from our camera survey and this deer was alive and well on 8/11. Next two pictures are from this morning from one of the guys who works on the place. He was probably going to get a pass this year and maybe next anyway but this just sucks.

I suspect coyotes but there is also a pipeline being put in about 200 yards from where this deer was found so no telling. Another buck may have killed him too as he was running around with bigger in his bachelor group.

Thanks for the vent.

I'm sure that's a possibility too. Heading up later today to take a look around but not sure there's much to look at other than recovering the head.

That really does suck. I’ve had it happen too many times now and once by a poacher.

I don’t think another deer killed it if they are still in velvet.

Me too, I don't even wanna say what I'm thinking, but as soon as I saw it by the water hole I thought bluetongue, lets pray it's not. I also think it would not be from another buck given the time of year.

My thinking too...but maybe pen deer have a different temperament as much as that sucks you’d rather it be the later for sure though

What would pipeline have to do with it?

Assuming he means traffic in and out, with a possible poacher.

Guys are putting in a pipeline. Traffic all over the place. Probably nothing to fear with them but you never know.

Found a buck dead in the shallows of a tank after being bit in the face by a rattlesnake once

Just another possibility ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

EHD is worse in August-September when deer are concentrated around water sources and midge populations increase.

That seems to be the consensus and probably the cause. There wasn’t much left to investigate this afternoon when we recovered him.

My guess would be either EHD or blue tongue with the recent rains and heat. Very slim chance it would have been from fighting this time of year...

Yeah, looks like his mouth/bottom jawline is swollen in that last live pic??
Also if you zoom in it looks like snot or drainage coming out of his nose.
Bummer. Looks like he hadn't been rubbed out an hour or two.
