    Trailer Wheel Stud Issues

I have a 6 month old dual tandem equipment trailer and have been having issues with studs breaking off. I'm dragging it back to the manufacture Monday to replace one for the second time. The manufacture advised to torque the flange nuts to 165 ft#'s and yesterday I popped another one off with the torque wrench. I'm willing to bet they were over torqued when they originally built the trailer. What do y'all think? Anyone have issues with studs breaking off?

    Is your torque wrench accurate?

Someone ran them down with an impact and hammered them as hard as the could.

Once they are over torqued, the damage is done.

Doesn't take much to over torque with an impact. I bet the damage was done. Be good to check your torque wrench too. I have one that failed and is now the best breaker bar I own.

It’s brand new. What’s the best way to check calibration?

A Comperator, or compare its torque to another wrench.

Apologies for highjacking the tread...I’ve always used a “t” bar tire iron, tightening lugs to where I’m pushing / pulling my weight on the bar...any idea how much torque that would be? Never had any come loose, about the same force needed to get them off, and never broke off any lugs. What is the usual recommended lbs of torque? The 165lbs mentioned above?

                  Thanks!

In My experience, a Standard Impact Gun aint going to break a lug stud. NASCAR

                        165 seems excessive

Yessir. Hate to be the one to try to change a tire on the side of the road with just a lug wrench.
To OP, I think I would have manufacture go ahead and change all them out.

                              I don’t think so.

From the owners manual. Maybe they told me wrong. 5/8 flange nut calls for 275 ft-lbs.
