    Black Walnut for smoking

What’s the word on using it? Some say toxic to use, and some say it is fine.

Mahogany makes great furniture as well but I don't hear people smoking with it. Interested in the answer

Curious as well. Isn't it in the same family as pecan and hickory?

Yes, but is said to be more bitter.

Black walnut wood used to sell for more than many other types. You might want to reconsider burning it. I would think White Walnut would be better for smoking/kindling. And is much more plentiful.

Keep it for the woodwork and use pecan and oak to smoke.

It smells terrible when I cut it on my mister saw, so I’ll pass on cooking with it. If you want to branch out from oak, there’s always cherry, apple, pear, etc.

I use walnut and maple offall to cook all the time. Not too strong like pecan/hickory are but not as good as post oak.

As stated, too many other options out there . I’ve tried several kinds and always come back to pecan.

I did. That is why my question was stated as it was. But thanks though.

Looks like I will just pick some up to tinker with in the shop, and leave it at that.

at $7-10 a board feet. I wouldn't smoke with it!
