If you want to try a DSLR, I'd try the Canon Rebel frame or Nikon D3400. You can get frame and 2 lens kits for $500+ from amazon or best buy. Grab a couple extra batteries and roll.

Would you recommend DSLR for the applications we are using?

Yes. I have used my T3 for everything from hunting, sports, family stuff and video. Recently bought the T5i frame for videos as it has the external mic port. Kit lenses are good enough until you get comfy.

Justin--don't have many close pics, but here is one. I'm still learning light/shadow contrast, etc.
