Deer Breeding Farms ~ Pros vs. Cons

Hopefully this can remain civil. No reason for it not too. I'd like to be educated if that's possible

As a hunter, what benefits have come from the deer breeding industry?

What are some of the negative results the deer breeding industry has brought to hunters?

Hopefully the benefits are gonna be more than bigger antlers.

Give it time... There are opinions as far as you can get on each end of the spectrum on here.

In my opinion that was the original intention was to produce and breed bucks for bigger antlers.

I think many people on one side will say its not fair chase because people let deer out of thier cage and get shot after being genetically modified for its life but the other half of people will agree that its benefits hunters because scientists can study these anmimals and tell us hunters what nutrients are good and bad for these animals and help us grow these deer to their full potential for once again us hunters

                    I'll bite...

The best use of captive breeding is for the purpose of propagation (introduction or reintroduction) and, secondly, as a management tool to improve the genetics on a piece of property.

Cons: deer breeding has been linked to the transport of disease and unethical hunting practices.

I enjoyed raising deer and hope to have some again someday. I like deer...I enjoy watching them and interacting with them. Lots of people participate in kick and shoot type of hunts for exotics and also pen-raised quail and pheasant hunts. These types of hunts are widely accepted but when you start meddling with whitetails and mule deer, folks get really upset.

Pros - generates data on WT species genetics, health, behaviors, etc which all tie into hunting advancements such as herd health, supplements, attractants, conservation efforts, hunting programs, management efforts, biological surveys, etc.
Generate cash , both directly and indirectly, to non-breeder programs, hunting, commercialism, merchandise, and State programs.

Cons - people cant distinguish between HF and Breeder programs...thats not really a fault of the breeder programs
Generates antimosity from 'old school naturalist hunters' who dont understand genetics and who incorrectly believe breeders are chemically enhancing deer with steroids and other drugs to make them grow huge antlers as if they were action comic book characters.
Does provide kick and shoot programs to operate.

                              Pros- grows bigger deer
                              Brings more $$$ into state
                              MAY help increase hunter numbers

Cons- creates a large “pay to play” market
                              Can facilitate disease spread
Creates a large grey area in which these deer (who are technically owned by the state) are bought and sold like livestock
