You're totally correct in your thought process. For my application:

I will be using this is a pen and I have struggled keeping all the corn inside the pen with my broadcast feeders so pigs continue to come around.

With this feeder I can control the corn better and keep it all in the pen.

In the end I am just having fun, if I wanted a better directional feeder I would invest in a better directional unit like the krivoman.

Update, the feeder is doing it's job. The coons climb all over it and are able to grab kernels that don't make it out of the shroud. I added 3 bolts to the end to limit their reach. Good thing is they can't get to the spinner.
