Default New Ranch - Callahan Co

We recently closed on a new property in northern Callahan County. About 8 miles N of Putnam. Rolling mesquite & live oak country, with a 60 acre sunflower field. Overall it looked too gamey for us to pass up.

I really enjoy the threads chronicling ranch projects, and following along, so I will try and do the same by keeping this one updated.

I filled 5 feeders a couple weeks ago, and put out a couple cameras. Also set up a new blind w/ my enthusiastic 2yo.

We have a dozer & track hoe on the property this week burying some old junk, building a new tank, and cleaning up a nice area for a new metal barn.

I still haven't settled on a name for the place...

Very pleased with the first check of the cams, but I will keep this thread updated as the season progresses.

Congrats! I love following these. Do you have any live water sources? How many tanks will you have once the new one is finished? How many acres total? Is the sunflower field a crop to harvest or just food source for wildlife?

3 tanks now - adding a 4th around the new barn area for aesthetics. A large seasonal creek, creating a pretty draw runs thru the place - it's called Post Oak Creek on the maps. I haven't found a post oak yet, but the place is covered in big live oaks.
The creek stopped flowing a couple weeks ago when the rains slowed own, and it got hot hot, but pools water most of the way.
750 +/- ac.

We will plow and re-seed the sunflower fields in January, and just moved some cows into the fields to control the Johnson grass.
The pigs and deer have already eaten the wheat heads off last years wheat crop, but the sunflowers look good.

For the deer - we will plant about 10-15 acres in wheat this fall.

We are on the East side of 315. Really nice views back to the west. The ranch across the road to the west has a lot of topography, as the country falls off towards deep creek.

Deep creek runs next to our camp. Flooded the cabin with 4 feet of mud/water in May 2016.

That sounds like an awesome place. Good deer too
Maybe I missed - any turkey?

Don’t get in too big of rush to name it.
I personally like ranch names that are one word.
Maybe after the survey names, the biggest landmark, or an old owner.
Or Call it by the brand.

Enjoy. Remember it is a marathon, not a sprint to get it all done.

They are 20+ years old.
I think Texas Hunting Supply, or whatever that brand was that was really popular in the 90s.
I welded on some new supports and cut them down from 12 to 10.

Dozer clearing out a new lane for a food plot.

We will be moving the big wooden stand away from the existing feed pen. Get it up on top of a nice hill away from the feeder
