    Cold Morning Doe (With Video)

I awoke Saturday morning, like many of you, to temperatures in the 20s. Dawn broke in Spicewood to an incredibly beautiful sight. Hunting in a mesquite thicket, the trees were all white with ice. Everything was frozen solid (including my feet). Had a small spike come in early and kept me entertained. It was slow from 7:30 to 8:00 and I froze my ever-lovin’ keister off! I was contemplating getting down, but hated to burn a morning for a one-hour hunt. My prayers were answered just a few minutes later when a doe worked her way in, skittish and jumpy. This was my out! If I shot her, I could be in the warmth of my truck in less than 10 minutes.

It played out as if scripted. She fed facing away from me as I turned on the camera and got ready. Deep breath, draw, aim low low low and release. YATZEE! She took out of there like a rocket sled on wheels. I quickly and quietly got my gear, climbed down and bee-lined it for the truck. Ahhh the warmth of the heater! Review of the film confirmed center punched lungs.

Once thawed, I took up the trail. Bright red blood on frozen grass makes for a special blood trail. Walked right to her, some 60 yards away.

In the video, notice the shower of ice and snow that falls from the tree when she side-swipes it on the mad dash to death.

    Thanks for coming along.

She was even nice enough to tenderize her left rump roast with that mesquite tree.

          Good stuff, John Boy!
