2018 TPWD Draw Hunts - let the fun begin

Man don't I wish, been driving by that place for years going to POC and have seen some brutes in their. I met the man in line to take on the biologist duties the year before the state took it over. He was working at the Chap then I met him again when he was helping out on the Matagorda Island deer hunt.

Only 12 tags but it will be a good hunt. He mentioned needing to take a lot of deer off the place as it was largely under hunted and over populated. I thought by such talk they'd have good numbers of management hunts on the place.

You and I both on driving by it. If I hadn't been gone all the time when I first got out of the military one of the ranch hands who did some of the hunting was going to take me out to kill as many hogs as possible and some of the Sam Bar.

They actually did hunts last year, never saw it on the draw list but there were people in Orange with rifles at the gate.

I got one my buddies to sign his boys up for first time this year and they were drawn. My son and I will be there on standby if any openings.

Here’s a thought. Interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

Let’s use GDE as an example. Everyone can continue to apply for unlimited hunts in this category. However, you can only be selected for one hunt in the category as opposed to several on a given draw year.

Seems that under this scenario it would increase the odds for others to be selected. Spread the wealth, so to speak.

I'm all for that, but that would hurt their entry fee $$$ and tpwd would have none of that...

I agree for the most part. This or limit the number of entries like on the youth which one of the reasons stated was to help fair share it. I don’t think it rings of socialism either. Socialists take from those that produce and give to those that don’t to make it “fair”. We all contribute through taxes and license fees to the state hunting program so not socialism to share amongst those participating.

I agree, the way the state hunts are structured now those that thrown the most money at it are getting the spoils, that should not be the case for state and federal lands.

I got drawn for gun deer a/s spike at hill country sna and archery at lower rgv teniente. Really looking forward to that one after my first time hunting lanwr last year.

Kiddo pulled youth either sex at Matagorda Island. Very exciting we've been putting in for that hunt like 7 years in a row now.

I agree, the way the state hunts are structured now those that thrown the most money at it are getting the spoils, that should not be the case for state and federal lands.

Not sure that's true. I've put in for literally almost every category for 6 or 7 years and yet to ever draw a hunt for myself. Several youth hunts now for hog and deer which were great and wife pulled a refuge hunt but I believe that was an e-postcard draw iirc. Her and I have 5, 6, or 7 pref points across the board from Alligator to Spring Turkey. Just unlucky I guess.

A lot of folks here started applying "in the new system" and got drawn, so they think it's great.
But, in the old system, where you had to put your ONE egg into ONE basket, the odds of getting drawn were sooooooooooooo much better, unless you put in for the high end places like the Chap.
I haven't drawn a hunt in the new system yet, whereas I drew a hunt every 2 or 3 years in the old.

I am convinced the new system is weighted heavily to 1st time applicants, likely for exactly like you say they think it's great and will continue to apply. Can't count how many posts I've read here and 2cool where a 1st time applicant score 2 or 3 hints his 1st year.

I have already gone 3 for 12 this year and have been putting in since 2004. I have had good luck under both the new and old systems. Last year was the first time since 2012 that I hadn't drawn anything.
