Thumbs up Garfish..........perfect day!!!

Well, the first bowfishing trip of the spring was incredible. Steve called me on Good Friday and said all the stars were lining up for a EPIC day on Saturday to sling arrows at monster gar. I have spent countless hours on the water with GarGuy and knew he was serious as a heart attack! I have a 6'2" on the wall and picking up my 7'4" gar later this week from the taxidermist shop...…Steve put me on both of those..….but, this trip was all about hitting that elusive 8' mark or BIGGER. The gar were everywhere...……...literally thousands, but I was looking for Big Momma! I passed on at least three 7' footers but was concerned they may not have been bigger than my 7'4". Lets see if I can post some pics. Did I mention the deckhand (Steve's nephew) got his first alligator gar on this trip......6'3" if not larger!!! That boy is spoiled!!!

On my bucket list after I retire in May of 2020 and move closer to that area! Bowfishing is what go me started into bowhunting. I have shot a ton of carp and smaller needle nose gar and a few decent gator gar but nothing close to what you have shot Oscar. Would love to do a trip with you doing this in the near future!

Yep, hearing that also. I guess when all the game fish are obliterated they will change the law again. There is absolutely no shortage of any species of gar on the lower Trinity River and its tributaries.

Was hoping you'd post the pick up pics! Steve sent them to me earlier along with the deck hand's video... Sucker looked yuuuuge in the video!! Some good fish right there!

For you guys wanting to shoot a biggun, better do it before Sept. 1... after that, it's nothing over 4 feet from the Trinity and its tributaries...

Steve is the big gar expert!! Y'all need to contact him right now if you want to go shoot one... Now is the season for pre spawn big floaters and the river is in good shape for it.

We did have a fine day to be on the water. We saw literally hundreds of gar over 5ft and could have shot every fish we saw. Oscar said he passed at least three 7fters and he is not kidding. He had the option to shoot any one of them. They were fish of a lifetime type gar. Oscar opted to not shoot one unless we thought it was an 8fter(which was a real possibility) and instead shot a nice 6ft range fish to eat.

If you look close at the pic of me standing at the trolling motor, you can see the head of a 7fter just to the right of my hand. She swam right up and bit the trolling motor. We had that happen a dozen times.

days when everything is absolutely perfect happen about once every ten years. I was sure glad to share this one with Oscar and my nephews..

That looks like fun! I would love to have a 7' footer because it would be bigger than Bobby's GG! Hopefully, I will be able to bowfish the Trinity before September 1st.

Thanks for sharing your adventures, OT!

All the stars were aligned on the Nueces River Wed-Sat also. HUGE gar all over the place. Felt like I went back in time. I'm about to start a thread with some questions for the serious gar hunters!

And congrats on a great trip!
