Default Inevitable end for all dog lovers

Had to put down my pug yesterday. He was 13 years old and my shadow. Heíd been slowing down the past 6 months but hit a wall this past couple weeks. Vet said heís just old and it happens, but yesterday my kids get home before my wife and found him collapsed in the kitchen. Pooped and peed himself and wasnít hardly responding to anything. Wife calls me all upset and I meet her at vet. Get him on oxygen and he perks up a little bit still not enough. His temp was low 90ís which is cool for a dog. X-rays showed enlarged heart with fluid throughout cavity. It was time whether I liked it or not. Signed the papers and held him till his heart stopped beating. Killed me to say the least. Kids didnít make it any easier when I got home. Buried him today day at wifeís family farm next to other dogs from their family. Rest In Peace my big boy Bear!

I was ugly crying the whole time. Could hardly get my hands steady enough to get my debit card from my wallet. Didnít go directly home. Needed to compose a little before telling kids. Donít know why I bothered cause seeing them upset made me start right back up. Itís their first experience with death and itís a hard concept to deal with. I let them miss school today and help me dig the hole and bury Bear with his blanket and some toys.

Condolences to your family on your loss. As a dog owner you know it’s inevitable but it always hurts your heart - especially when you have young kids. I’ve done it 7 times in my adult life and it never gets any easier.

Yep. Cried like a baby when I had my last yellow lab put down. Still tear up thinking about it. It was over a decade ago.

I am very sorry for you loss.

My dog Katie is about to be 15. Unbelievable. I cannot imagine life without her. She is essential part of the regular household everyday schedule. We will be loss without her. I use to walk right past her wagging tail in the evenings after work and I would just go right into the house. Now I always stop & pause and warmly pet her and give her a loving moment as I enter. I know these times are precious and few. I only hope that I am there when she leaves us so that she does not go alone.

My sincerest sympathies to your family.

Dogs are only here for a short part of our lives, but we are there for all of their's, and they give it all to us. We repay them by making sure it's worth what they give us, and by making sure they don't suffer.

I stole bits and pieces of that from different quotes, and taylored it to fit my own thoughts, but it's all true.

Sorry for your loss man, I've got an 8 pound, 12 year old, biscuit hound layin next to me right now...

I'm sorry man. That's heart breaking to read. Especially for the kids being their first experience with this sort of thing makes it that much harder I'm sure. It's never easy seeing the decline in a dogs health and knowing that's going to be the end result. He had a good run and lived a long life with people that cared about him and had you there until the end. Be glad in knowing you gave him an awesome life and he's not here suffering. I know that probably doesn't help much. Tough deal all around.

Had to do that 3 years ago. She had an enlarged heart also and was having seizures due to lack of oxygen. Woke up one morning and decided she was suffering too much. Met the vet,was the longest ride ever. Kissed her goodbye and told her I loved her.. my husband held her until she was gone. Still hurts. God bless you sir and your little buddy.
