Default Pistol during archery only?

I have been looking online cant find it. I think I remember that the law changed that you can carry with you when hunting now in archery only?

In to be refreshed on the rule. I hate not having any firearm during my hike!

Yes
Hunting Regulations

Means and Methods

It is now lawful for any person (other than a convicted felon) to possess a firearm while hunting deer or turkey during an archery-only season; however, the use of a firearm to take turkey or deer during an archery season remains unlawful.

Any reason why you need a pistol to bowhunt, other than it's you right to own one. Seems like extra weight to lug around. Now if you hunt down by the border or in east Texas, I can see a reason. Just kidding on the East Texas.

Pigs, trespassers... black panthers... all good reasons to keep the pistol handy

I've shot rattlesnakes and pigs walking to and from a bow stand. Remember the father and son near Stephenville who were attached by a pack of wild dogs several years ago. Had they not been armed the son probably wouldn't be here today.

Cornsnakes, bullsnakes, water snakes, black widows, brown recluses, wolf spiders, wasp, bees, raccoons. Okay, that was a joke.

Honestly, pigs and Rattlesnakes is all I can think of. If you wear the right belt and holster the weight it adds is no big deal at all.

SNAKES! I've had many in my ground blinds throughout the year.

Walk up on a bunch of hogs a 5am in the dark!

Never know, I dang sure carry mine in South Texas.. Never know who, or what you might run into down there...

Once it gets cold at our lease in Concho county I leave it at the camp, we don't have any pigs or really anything to even be concerned about out there.

So if you make a bad shot you can use the pistol to finish off the deer. I'm glad they changed it, gives a pretty quick and painless why to finish one if need be

Trespassers, Poachers, anybody else doing something illegal that could be armed.
Hog that I shot with an arrow that isn't dead yet or feels cornered when I am tracking a deer at night...
Aggressive dogs
Mt Lions

I agree, I wouldn't waste a 9mm on a snake, nor my first shot on a pig either. I carry it for self defense.

In south Texas I would say for rattlebugs and illegals with bad intentions. At our ranch in Mills county for rattlebugs. I have never been scared of being attacked by hogs or anything else.

I wouldn't be kidding on the East TX part. I was scouting a new lease and was probably 30-40 yards from the fenceline/tree line. Next thing I know, a guy is charging out of the woods at me with a 3 ft long tree branch. I pulled, but didn't point, and he stopped dead in his tracks and dropped the branch.

He said he thought I was one of his meth-head neighbors coming to steal more stuff from him (and he admitted to me he was really high).

That's why I carry when I'm on the lease.

Can't do this during archery season though - the only legal means is with an arrow.

I just carry it to look cool. if I run up on a pack of hogs I usually gently set my bow down and tear out into the middle of them, pick out the biggest and jump on his back grab him by the snout sticking my middle and ring fingers in his snout and in one smooth twisting and yanking motion break his top jaw off and use his blood as face paint. What...?... that's not how yall do it?

in all honesty something growled at me one time and it sounded mean and unless it growled I couldn't hear it. It growled three different times and every time it was in a different spot than the last growl. Freaked me out a little. now every time I go and stalk around I have it on my side. Just In Case.

I don't think this is allowed during archery-only season. Can you cite where this is stated? I cannot find it. How would you prove you did not shoot the deer first with the pistol and then stick an arrow in it?

The official statement why they let you carry now was:
Quote:
By policy, the department has historically allowed persons licensed to carry a concealed handgun under the provisions of Government Code, Chapter 411, Subchapter H, to be in possession of a handgun while hunting during an archery season. The department has determined that rather than have a confusing regulation that allows firearms to be possessed during archery seasons in some circumstances, but not in others, it is prudent to allow any person to possess a firearm while hunting during archery seasons; however, the use of a firearm to take turkey or deer during an archery season would still be prohibited.
So it was just to eliminate the headache of determining if a person was allowed to carry or not.

I carry a handgun when I hunt for the same reason I carry one other places... you don't become magically more or less safe when in the woods.

One reason it carry is if you get lost or hurt, you can use it to help locate yourself to others. I'll be carrying at least my 380 in my pack.
