I have mine just barely touching the string and serving on the string the length of the rubber. But I think credit card is good.

Letting it touch does nothing to the tune. Ive tried it with many bows. Credit card away and tuned. Move it forward, no change except its a tad quieter.

Credit card thickness is good and some use a dollar bill. I have even had mine touch without changing string position and not noticed any difference.
