Get it done early, I always say.
This year that didn't happen.
I hunted the opener and the wind didn't cooperate.
Managed to get an arrow in a nice doe late and went home.
Third weekend in October, wind didn't cooperate again.
I drove home without a deer.
The missing detail on both these weekends is the best buck in my pasture showed while I was on stand.
..and sensed something was wrong and exited quickly.
Thought I'd missed my chance with him.
I drive 400 miles each way to hunt.
Bad wind or not, I'm hunting.
Fast forward to this hunt...
22° at 4am.
My scent-free outdoor camp shower was not pleasant.
But the wind was right..
Movement was slow and an old doe showed at 7:30.
She was joined by a buck fawn and another doe at 8.
Then a 3 year old 9-point showed and started chasing the does, neck swole and in full rut.
He runs off the does and was walking back...
When he stops cold and stares to the west.
My buck was on scene, crab-walking toward the young buck, ears pinned-back and visibly upset.
He looked huge.
While he focused on the young buck, I took my chance and got drawn.
Rage Hypodermic passed completely through him and he fell within 60 yards.
Had to let Daisy track him anyway.
Its my best buck.
27 main beams
5.5" bases
38" of mass
Green gross 156 2/8
This year, it was worth the wait.
