Default Headless deer

Since Friday morning I've seen 3 headless dear in the bar ditch while driving to work. Can't figure on people that shoot one just for the head and then let that much meat just rot.

They might have been hit by vehicles, and had nice racks.

Saw a nice, young 6 pt walking the yellow path yesterday afternoon. Was dead in the ditch on the red spot this morning. If he would've had some larger headgear, I'm sure he'd be missing his head by now. Poor dude made it all the way to rifle season to be hit by a truck

People cut the heads off all the time of bucks that get hit by vehicles. Saw a decent buck that was dead in the ditch on Sunday morning at 7am and when I came back at 9am the head was cut off and gone.

The GW's I think have started doing that. I know the one in my area a couple years ago was taking the antlers off of hit bucks.

Can't cut the antlers off with a pocket knife but you can take the whole head and cut the antlers off at home.

Illegal to cut them off. GW in my area sets up on them to catch the people cutting them off.

Sounds like a wonderful use of tax payer money. Especially since there are 1-2 GW per county. I highly doubt this is true but more of a local myth.

A GW hunting over a dead bait deer.

I was told by a GW that they couldn't let you have the head/antlers, because people try to use them to win big buck contests. He may have just been telling me that so he could keep it.

what I disagree with in Texas is that if you hit it with your car you have to let it rot on the side of the road

complete head removal is from the GW. Sawed top of head is from the person that hit it with their Mini Cooper or passed by and stopped to collect.

Not a local myth at all. Two years ago I had a beautiful 3.5 year old 10 point that I was watching all season at my house in the country get hit by a truck. I saw it happen and was sick to see which deer it was. Called the game warden to ask about tagging the deer and processing the meat. He said if I touched that deer he would write me a ticket on the spot. He called me back about 20 minutes later and asked if he could sit in my driveway to watch the carcass because he was sure somebody would stop to cut the head off. I said okay and less than 30 minutes later he was writing some guy a ticket and confiscated the severed head as evidence.

I never will understand cutting off a dead deer head hit by a car. So what do you do with it? Get it mounted and put on your wall. How do you explain that hunting story and take pride it that!

Very possible for sure. Most of the time when they take for testing they paint orange on the remaining carcass.

You have to ask the law for permission before you can legally possess a road killed deer. Usually they try to donate the meat and they keep the antlers.

They offered me the meat, but I let another guy who stopped have it. I was more worried about my new truck with 10k in damage

Come on people. They are removing the head for testing, research and area herd statistics. Iíd feel sorry for a GW/Biologist to remove what may already be a stinking head much less try to load the whole carcass up in the back of their truck, more than likely by themself

Learn something new every day. I'd not known the GW would use the heads to check for CWD. Also didn't know you could as a GW if you could process the meat if you hit one.

I have worked several Auto vs. Deer crashes where the GW let the person who hit them have the deer and the rack. Maybe just in my old county but several times.
