Default I waxed all of my traps

I didn't think I would ever do this, but I waxed all of my traps a couple days ago. I hadn't really seen or understood the need to, but I bought four used traps off of trapper man and they had been previously waxed. They were slick and all set and tripped easily. The wax was not on them much anymore but was still embedded in the steel. It really lubricated well. That is a purpose that I did it for. The traps are really fast now and don't bind up when I'm setting them.

Just be sure you let the metal of the traps come up to the temperature of the wax is so it soaks in and doesn't just stick to the outside surface.

I saw the pic! Was gonna gig a little more and say them to cottontails stopped there then laughed at that cat. Looks like you had a pretty good season over there. That landowner going to let you take a break or keep you out into hot weather?

The water hole he was watering at every few days was about to dry up, so I was glad to get him. He was in a sheep pasture so rancher is happy too. Rancher saw him a month ago and I finally caught him. First coyote ever killed on this ranch I believe.

Question for you dirt set/foot hold trappers. What lures and baits are you using for coyotes? Going to give the steel traps a shot on some low fence country in south and north/east Tx if that matters on lure selection. Any other tips you gave would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You setting dirt holes? I've watched a lot of you tube and there's good information just trying to find out brands and types of lure and baits to use here in Texas. Most those guys are mid west. I'm guessing stay coyote glad and use urine on scat with or a chunk bait down in dirt hole.

What Eric ain't tellin' is dirt holes don't work cause there's so many stink in' rats around the coyotes just run around the pasture with their mouth open and catch all they want, they done forgot what it's like to dig for 'em.

Didn't think about that, all the research I have been doing said hunger doesn't matter. They are thieves and stealing another coyotes hidden food and putting it else where is natural. Yal doing more of the sent or pee post set?

I use mostly flat sets with urine and scat for the bait. I have tried dirt holes and they work but seems like attract a lot more skunks and coons.

Default Coyote Trapping The Dirt Hole Set

I’ve had good luck with dirt hole sets in South Texas.

On this year’s coyote line, 98% of my catches came from dirt hole sets, or a variation of that set.

On the ground I was trapping, flat sets generated nowhere near the interest the baited & lured D.H sets did.

This resulted in very little foot traffic at the set, and a lot of drive-bys.

The coyotes told me they wanted bait and lure, so that’s what I gave them.

My dirt hole sets also produced a high percentage of first, second, and third night catches.

Two thirds of all the coyotes I trapped this year were caught within the first three nights of making the set.

The vast majority of those catches occurred within the first two nights.

I think the key is let the coyotes tell you what they want. Complete opposite of tuco the dirt holes here produced nothing. Exact opposite affect lol. It amazes me what a little different terrain makes in a coyote

Never know what's going to work, that's why trapping coyotes is so interesting or frustrating.

I've been a rat mimick for many years, before I use dirt holes in an area I go find holes to copy, takes time but it improves catch rates. In one area of Kansas the only dirt hole that worked needed to look like a new prairie dog dig.
