Default McCallen Texas info

Going down to Edcouch in a few weeks for regional powerlifting and looking for a good hotel and best place to eat in the area. I believe there are some Holiday Inns in mccallen so thatís the direction Iím going to try to say. Will have 3 high school girls with me and one of their moms.

Depending on what they weigh, we might be trying to carb load

Any advice is appreciated.

I live in Weslaco and work in Edcouch Elsa. Most definitely stay in Mcallen. Lots of good eating. What are your preferences?

Costa Messa, Delias tamales, House wine. Personally been to these and they’re good.

Elsa typically has fast foods chains. But if you want good authentic Mexican food then you can try Don pedros which is front of high school. The other place that I like better is La Hacienda in Elsa. Itís located on 88 N. About a mile north of Whataburger.
Pieology in edinburg would probably be a favorite for the girls. Add toppings to your own pizza.
Plenty of taquerias in all towns.

I don't know...I'm in McAllen & we tend to hit Arturo's & Milano's on a regular basis.

Koko's & Zamoras are both good for mex food...there's really a ton of places to pick from now & have some really nice / expensive places along with the papdeaux to fancy steak houses. I'm sure the hotel's will have literature as well.

Arturo's in Weslaco has great mexican food & I think Milano's right down the road is the best Italian anywhere.

Is Arturos the one that used to be in Progresso?

Costa Mesa has a good tampiquena plate.

Mrs. Gs is pretty good for a quick lunch. It's the original owner of El Pato.

They still are...just brought another to the US because of the non-sense in mex same as El Pastor & La Fogata although those in mex may have closed not being in progresso.

We did Valentines on Saturday at Arturos & I got the tampequena which is great.

If you want good Mexican food and LOTS of it, go to Taco Ole in Mission (not the one in McAllen). It's only a 8 mile drive if you are in downtown McA. It's a lunch buffet and buddy they have it all and it's good stuff.

For upper end food- El Divino (try the campfire cocktail !!), SALT, House Wine, and Santa Fe all really good but a little pricey.

I find a hard time believing a mexican buffet is that great. I have been to a handful of cafes in south Texas with lunch buffets that weren't very good.

You may want to rather stay in Edinburg, near the 281 corridor. McAllen has a whole lot of construction on 83 and getting in and out is a major pain. There are tons of hotels on 281 and lots of good food close by also.

Taco ole in mission is solid...never ate off the buffet but if you leave there hungry, you went to the wrong place.

Let me rephrase......not the best you can get. I'm not picky. Most food is good. I'm sure I'd like it.

Itís a good 5 hour drive for us. We are going to leave at 8, hit the ferry and drive down the beach then head south from there. We will check into the hotel and go straight to weigh in. After weigh in we eat then back to hotel.

Heck man two of the best restaurants in the Valley are in Weslaco...Arturo's and Milano's Italian. I'd drive from McAllen to eat at either of those any time.

Right across the Holiday Inn Express is a shopping plaza. Academy Sporting Goods. To eat there is a Starbucks, Taco Palenque. And new Palenque Grill. That's a good one. Texas Roadhouse.

There is a Taco Ole in Edinburg on Freddie Gonzales, very good Tex mex food. You won’t be disappointed. Hope you have a good time in the valley.

Delia's Tamales are awesome. I know there is already one neigh sayer but I think the problem is sometimes we tend to compare them to ones made by grandma, mom or wife. Of course it's hard to beat homemade tamales but Delia's makes some good ones.

Been a few years since I've spent any time in McAllen but Palenque Grill had great food and eye candy. Palenque Grill should not be confused with Taco Palenque which has diminished in quality over the years. Also Taco Palenque is a fast food type establishment while Palenque Grill is not.

Just got a call from the hotel and not sure where I am going to stay. They apparently had some overbooking or something. Told them the check is already cut so they can figure out where they are going to put me.

I am actually a fan of Delias. One of our coaches goes down to the valley often and brought me some last time and they were good. Not like B&B in San Antonio but good. My wife actually ate some and isnt a tamale person.

I am going to be in a school bus for 5 kids. Everything will go into the hotel and the meet just because I am OCD. Things can get stolen anywhere you go. Good practice is to take everything in with you.

Well we went and ate!

Not sure of the name but one of our coaches hooked us up and it was good.

And we lifted

And I got searched at the check point. Apparently they busted a bus a couple weeks ago so they checked me out
