Default Questions For Those That Have Been To Africa

I have never been, this will be my first trip unexpectedly. I won a trip with Bos en Dal Safaris. Adding a few days and some animals of course. Dates are set for June.
I dont even have a passport!!
I have been reading and trying to get things i need done asap in order.
Any advise for first timers?

I use a CPAP. Bad sleep apnea. Has anyone traveled with theres to Africa? Or is it best to learn to sleep without for the trip?

Would anyone on here be going out of Houston or Atlanta around June 7th?

Get a passport soon as possible.
Check your shot records and ensure you are up to date, tetanus especially. Other per the CDC recommendations.
CPAP probably OK on the flight over, long at 16 hours but not necessary. Get voltage adapters and use it in Africa with no problem.
Follow forums like Accurate Reloading or Africa Hunting and ask all the things you can think of before your trip.

Relax and have fun. The first trip is the best and unforgetable!!!!!

I also have a CPAP and I would never even consider going without it! I even took it to Northern Quebec on my caribou hunts, ran of a battery with an 110 inverter.
Also Iím getting a small travel Cpap for the flight itís rechargable.

Pack then repack. Then repack again. I had more clothes than I needed, even after unpacking. Didn't even take my camo out of the bag.

Good luck!! Like everyone else will say, enjoy it because you will be making plans for a return trip on the plane home.

Depending on what region you are going to depends on your shot requirements. I went to the Limpopo region and the only thing that was required by a Doctor with the UT Medical Branch was a tetnus and hepititus C. He also gave me some antibiotics to take with me and told me to take some imodeum with me just in case.
You will really enjoy the trip....I took my CPAP machine with me....be careful as their electric is 220V but my machine can use either. I was lucky, my outfitter/guide had some transformers made that took the power to 110V. I also bought me a multi electric plug that would plug into several outlet types.

I think you meant Hepatitis A & B. There is no vaccine for Hep C... Don't have unprotected sex with the natives, share needles with them, or get an African tattoo while you are there and you will be fine!

Took to many clothes, they wash your stuff everyday, look at wearher may need some warm clothes for early am truck rides. Day pack to take out with you. Hat to cover head and neck or a neck gaiter, i got sunburned some what by the 5th day. Take lots of pics and position the animals properly. Have fun enjoy the whole trip. I got the hep a &b and tetnus shots but i think the hep takes 3 months or so and is a series or was when i got mine in 2007. If taking ammo read TSA, airlines and country of entry regs they are not all the same. Same for rifle if taking one.

You will only need three days worth of clothes they wash every day. I would recommend packing a set of clothes with your bow just in case your bag gets lost. Also add your optics and range finder. Carry your camera gear with your ID passport , tickets, cash, prescriptions and so on. With that loooong flight a fresh pair of undies with wet wipes will put a smile on your face. Take a small notebook and make notes of your day before bed every night. Lots of pics and video. Have fun and start planning your second trip!!

How much cash should I take, for final bill, tips, etc?
Did you pay the final bill to the Outfitter with cash or credit?
Dip and ship company cash or credit?

Most outfits want cash...... I used to just wire over however much I thought my final bill would be a head of time. If I had some left they wired it back after the hunt or If I owed them a little more I would wire it to them when I got back home.

Don't leave money in your room.

If you decide to take cash you can't get out of the country with more than $10,000.00 in your pocket.
As soon as you get to the farm give it to the outfitter so he can put it in a safe.
Dip and Ship will let you pay with CC and normally you will never meet them.
It is something that gets sorted out once you are back home.

I plan the animals I want to take and budget accordingly. I then wire about that much to my outfitter by the time I head over. Or at least 85% of it since you never know what you will end up shooting. Ask your outfitter if they take credit cards. Mine did not until recently. Now they do but there is a fee. I always brought enough cash for tips and spending money for souvenirs. If I owed a balance at the end they always just let me pay that when I got back home. My outfitter has a US bank account so I just wrote a check and deposited in their account. You'll have to check with your outfitter as to how they do it. But, the only cash I ever took was for tips.

Dip and Ship comes later, after you are home and they can usually take credit cards or they will have a US bank account as well that you can make a deposit into.

I would check with your outfitter and see what they recommend. I took travelers cheques.

You may take over $10k in cash but you do have to report it through customs.

Thanks everyone
I guess I need to call them, it says on Dries Visser website that the bill needs to be settled the last day before leaving the office.
I don't mind paying cash but am worried about carrying that much money and they have a 3% credit card fee. Of course that would be some Cabela's point......

That is probably standard language for the website. I bet if you are close to 90% when you leave he will not have a problem with you paying the rest when you return. Especially since it appears he has a US bank account. Also ask them about checks. A lot of times they will accept a check if they have a US account. Especially now with remote deposit apps, he can deposit it from SA with his phone. much better than bringing all that cash.

Best Buy or Amazon sells an all-in-one adapter that works all over the world. They're cheap.

Like others have said, don't over pack. They do laundry everyday. 3 sets of clothes are plenty.

Take a flash drive or memory stick. Your guide will take a million great photos and you'll want to take them home with you.

I assume you're bow hunting, but if not, 30.06 is a great round. Plus, you can tip your guides with ammo. I've also tipped my guides with hunting boots, clothes, bino's, etc...all of which is very expensive across the pond.

If you're traveling with a firearm, I highly recommend RiflePermits.com. Henry and his team are excellent. Its euphoric when they walk you to front of the customs line and you by-pass a sea of humanity.

If you have an AmEx card, check into their Priority Pass service. It gives you and your traveling companions free access to a host of airport hospitality lounges...free food and free booze.

I'll PM you my cell and give me a shout if you'd like to BS. Lastly, I couldn't be more happy for you...you're gonna love it.

From what I hear it can be done after the hunt. But the taxidermist I am using suggested doing it ahead of time so that they are aware of your hunt and can have certain papers already completed

you can do it later. In fact, I went last July. Had some tanning done there so it took a while. I recently got notification my trophies were ready to ship. I was going to use a Taxi that would act as the import agent and pick up for me (I've done it with other taxis in the past). However, this particular taxi wasn't responsive and the Dip and Ship couldn't get what they needed from him so I went ahead and hired Coppersmith to do it for me. No issues. My trophies are now on their way.

I didn't even contact Coppersmith until my trophies were ready to be loaded on a truck and sent to the airport in Jo'berg. (7 months after my trip)

I don't mean to de-rail the thread, but just out of curiosity, which animals did they say/suggest that 55# is too low of a draw weight, to hunt with?

actually, I didn't catch that. Good question. I've seen plenty of women and kids in camp who were shooting less than that with no issues. Maybe not an Eland, but I've seen them shoot Wildebeest, Gemsbok, etc....

Suggestion?

Lots of your questions and other helpful hints have been given. Enjoy your trip, listen to your PH and take plenty of pics and perhaps a journal to jot down notes and things that happen or that you see. If at all possible, get all your adventures and shots/recoveries on video. those are great to go back and watch.

Good luck, shoot straight and looking forward to your stories and LDP's. I have been 3 times and I am far from being done! Hunting Africa will get into your blood and it is virtually impossible to resist the urge once you get back!

I have impala, warthog, springbok, blesbok, gemsbock, kudu, blue wildbeest and eland on my menu. If I get lucky. Didnt want to sit in a blind or hide either and to old and big to try spot and stalk with a bow. Most of all I had a 375hh that needs to be shot some

Any advise for first timers?

I use a CPAP. Bad sleep apnea. Has anyone traveled with theres to Africa? Or is it best to learn to sleep without for the trip?

Would anyone on here be going out of Houston or Atlanta around June 7th?

If bow hunting, DO NOT go thru Amsterdam. Arrow tips of any kind are not allowed in Amsterdam.

This is my first trip to Africa gobel rescue is like care flight here if you need it they will come it was $119 for 7 days as for gobel entry is a pre screen at the airport helps you get though security and customs a lot faster it was $100.

Suggestion?

Your import broker should take care of that. If you are using Coppersmith they will handle and have it shipped to your taxidermist.

I signed up for Global Rescue yesterday. 14 days with the add on in case something happens with the gov. or rebels or anything, it was $315 per person, since Iím taking my nephew and heís not my immediate family, I had to get a policy for each of us.
Like all insurance itís a waste of money UNLESS you need them.

Did you pay the final bill to the Outfitter with cash or credit?
Dip and ship company cash or credit?
I take $10k on trips, last trip to RSA I took it in RAND. Chase Bank had the money for me in one day. See what works best for your outfitter. Been 5 times and never an issue in RSA. I have never used a credit or debit card.
I had $10k in U.S. dollars for our Europe hunt during Christmas going thru Germany and had wanna be commando's asking a thousand questions. I knew the guidelines/rules and they did not. Almost missed our connection to Spain fooling with those mental midgets!

None of the animals you listed are two hefty for 45-55 pounds but I understand wanting to let your 375 eat. Personally, I would bring both.....or better yet, use their rifle!

I have a yearly family plan on Global Rescue as it is just another layer .....JUST IN CASE! We do 2-4 trips off U.S. soil per year, so you never know. And yes the $100 to get thru airports efficiently is PRICELESS!!!!

Do you think Global Entry is worth the money, since I have contracted with Africa Sky to get the gun permit and escort us thru the airport and to the guest house?
Or is that two different items....
