What Makes A Good Shooting Tab?

What qualities do you look for in a shooting tab?

I want to start shooting with a tab. I do a little work with leather and would like to make my own so I'd like to hear from y'all what makes a good tab to you.

I shoot three under so I'm thinking a solid tab to start with.

Cordovan if you can find it.
Hair works great too but will eventually wear off.
I've got one I made with ballistic nylon in case I get caught out and it's wet.

I usually just cut em out of any slippery leather that's lying around. I also will double up on tabs if the leather isn't thick enough. Bear in mind though, I shoot pretty heavy bows, and only 2 under. So I usually need a little more material padding my fingers than most guys.

What does cordovan do? Is it slicker?

Yes it is slicker. Slickest of all leathers, but hard to get your hands on.

Ballistic nylon is even slicker when lubricated, and will last just about as long if kept lubricated. It quieter too.

I use coconut oil. Vaseline works also.

Some folks use an automotive spray silicone lubricant.
That makes them super slick. To slick for me.

Good to know. I can get Cordovan but that horse hide ain't cheap.
                Ballistic Nylon is cheaper.

Saunders used to make the perfect tab, the PakTab. It is a plastic tab. Slicker than owl poop, impervious to water, does not hold scent, and does not require breaking in. Like I said, the perfect tab!!!!

Then, a couple years ago, they changed the plastic in the main part of the tab, making it stiff as heck. I hate the newer ones, and am glad I got a good stash of the old ones!

Like said above cordovan, calf hair, and the nylon are you best bets to make one out of!
